About the Author

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a Swedish scientist, nobleman, and theologian who spent his life investigating the mysteries of the soul. Born in Stockholm to a staunchly Lutheran family, he graduated from the University of Uppsala and then traveled to England, Holland, France, and Germany to study the leading scientists of the time. He gained favor with Sweden’s King Charles XII, who gave him the position of overseer of the Swedish mining industry. Later, he was given a seat on the Swedish House of Nobles by Charles XII’s successor, Queen Ulrika Eleonora. Between 1743 and 1745 he began to have visions of heaven, hell, and Jesus Christ which resulted in a stream of books about the nature of God, the afterlife, and the inner meaning of the Bible. He devoted the last decades of his life to studying Scripture and presenting his own unique theology to the world.

More About the Author

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a Swedish scientist, inventor, and theologian who made significant discoveries in many of the natural sciences, including astronomy, anatomy, geology, and mineralogy. At age fifty-five, his intensive search for answers to ultimate questions culminated in an awakening that gave him a unique insight into the workings of the spiritual world. He spent the remainder of his life writing about his experiences and how human beings can come to a deeper awareness of the divine.

Swedenborg's ideas have influenced people as diverse as Helen Keller, Johnny Appleseed, William Blake, Henry James, Ralph Waldo Emerson, D.T. Suzuki, Jorge Luis Borges, and Dr. Mehmet Oz. The continuing appeal of his thought undoubtedly lies in his insights into the afterlife, concepts of divine love, and focus on personal and social development.

The first time I read this boook was in a college course. It was a good text for a class, being straightforward but also sparking many entertaining and intricate discussions. Now that I am done the class, Divine Love and Wisdom is a wonderful book to pick up and read whenever. It desribes the Sun of heaven and the relationship between this world and the next. For solid and simple to understand ideas about God and His nature and the effects the spiritual world has on the natural and vice versa, this is a versatile and thought-porvoking book that I highly recommend!

These books are a wonderful guide to how this life relates to the next and how God directs all life. They answer questions about why bad things happen, the purpose of life, and order in the universe, in a philosophical way that is practical and easy to understand. If you are looking for something deeper than scientific answers, I highly recommend Divine Love and Wisdom and Divine Providence!

This work is essential reading for anyone seeking clear, sensible answers about the nature of God, and the relationship between the heavens and the earth (or the spiritual world and the natural world). I read this in college many years ago, and return to it frequently. It just makes so much sense.

I totally would recommend the "Divine Love and Wisdom" (Emanuel Swedenborg) as a must read, for anyone out there who is willing to delve into the science of religion. With that in mind, Swedenborg will bring the searching personality closer to the fiber of creation by the Creator " ..that we are all an essential part of God's Divine plan, and that without us God's plan could not come to fruition". Additionally, he (Swedenborg)opens the door to the fundamentals of spirituality as he explains in the text. Now, will this be a recommendation? Yes, and Yes again.

Divine Love and Wisdom by Swedenborg(S) is not an easy read, but it is without doubt a genuine 'spiritual treasure-trove'. I first came across this book in 1996, and it took me over three to four years to begin to apprehend it properly. To get across some aspects of spiritual truths S uses the 'science of his time', but accepting this limitation, S does a brilliant job of it. I have a PhD and ScD from Cambridge University,UK, but still have to look up several books in modern science, and of course the Bible and other 'spiritual' books, especially those by S (and also by Sadhu Sundar Singh) to better apprehend the truths encapsulated in this book. In saying this, I'm not trying to put off a reader who is not well 'versed' in science or other books by S, but cautioning the reader of some of the requirements to better apprehend this book. I have read several books by leading scientists who are also 'theologians', such as John Polkinghorne, C A Coulson, H K Schilling, I G Barbour, and Denis Alexander, to name but a few, but S is on a league of his own - he had 'double sight', a gift from the Lord to His servant to accomplish the special work he was called to do. 'Double sight' is not unlike what the three disciples Peter, James and John, had/experienced on the 'Mount of Transfiguration(Luke9:28-36). I have not come across any book to compare with the insights and wisdom of S's DLW. One has to bear in mind that S lived in the 18th century, when the various sciences were beginning to flourish in the West, and 'new disclosures' could be made by the Lord.Read more ›
