Finally the truth about sex and the Bible!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition (Paperback)
This book is a Godsend! I'm one of millions of people frustrated with the disparity between the experiential joy and pleasure of sex, and the negative, "Bible condemns it," pap forced on us by the church. Divine Sex explores all Bible verses having anything at all to do with sex, and gives us blockbuster revelation of the Bible's very positive attitude toward sex. This book reveals the inherent innocence of such things are nudity, masturbation, oral sex, etc. And it absolutely knocks the slats from under the prevailing theology of "adultery" and "fornication." This is the one book I am absolutely THRILLED to have read. If you want the Biblical truth about sex, this is THE book for you.

Read this book along with the Bible.,

Truly a clear voice that rings out in the battle between human sexuality versus holiness. The tons of Bible quotesgiven by this author help to clarify what is sexualy pure and what is sinful, and is a breath of fresh air compared to the "Abstinence until marriage" books usually found in some other Christian help books and the "Everything Goes" attitude found in secular media. Read this book along with the Bible, and find the truth for yourself.

A MUST-READ FOR EVERY CHRISTIAN!,
By TruthLover (New Braunfels, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition (Paperback)
If you are considering reading this book...just do it! The specific issues are related to Christian sexual ethics, but there is broader application of some of the core pillars in this study. What the modern Church teaches about sex is not what is revealed in the Bible. This book will be a blessing to you and yours. God bless Darwin Chandler and other authors that seek truth...find it...and then help other believers to hear it!

Biblical Evidence that demands a Verdict,
This review is from: Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition (Paperback)
I used to think that pre marital sex was a sin. It was a slam dunk biblically speaking. When I went to study the issue (to prove my point to a christian who had no problem with it)I started to realize that I was wrong and what I was taught was not bibilcal. Any serious student of the Bible who is doing a study on sexuality and the bible need to have this book. I would also recomend The Poisoning of Eros: Sexual Values in Conflict or Sexual Liberation: The Scandal of Christendom (Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality)in order to study church history and specifically its view on sex. I would also addDirt, Greed, and Sex: Sexual Ethics in the New Testament and Their Implications for Todayfor a more scholarly work on the subject. I wish all christians could read these books and search the scriptures for themselves to see if these things be true. Acts 17:11 I have been a christian since I was 12 and wish I had read these 15 + years ago.

Finally a book that says what I saw the Bible say,
By
This review is from: Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I remember in my teens reading
that masturbation was a sin but they didn't give one single verse from the Bible that said so. It took me 5 or 6 years to be able to find the medical info so that I had both medicine and the Bible agreeing before I was brave enough to say to myself that masturbation wasn't a sin. It was many many more years before I could tell someone else that masturbation wasn't a sin. This book will help you be brave to says what the Bible says. Then read "Dirty, Greed and Sex" and find out about how sex relates to the "purity laws" and "property laws." While these books don't agree on everything, the do support each other a lot.

Fantastic Book,

This review is from: Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition (Paperback)
In Divine Sex the author takes you step by step through the scripture and explains why he believes the traditional church has created non Biblical sexual rules. In this book, Thelos examines scripture, uses multiple references and interpretations, chooses an interpretation, then uses the principles from the scripture to illuminate Godly sexuality in today's world. It is a fantastic book which should be read by anyone with a true desire to understand Biblical sexuality. The only drawback of this book is that it is redundant in multiple places.
As a previous poster mentioned, Dirt, Greed, and Sex is also a fantastic read, however, the interpretations differ in multiple places. Also, the writings of Countryman focus primarily on the purity laws of the Old and New Testament in determining Biblically appropriate sexual lifestyles. Countryman's interpretation, for today's sexuality, centers around the ideas of purity of the heart instead of physical purity (as in the Old Testament). However, I would also rank Dirt, Greed, and Sex with five stars. Dirt, Greed, and Sex is invaluable because of the detailed and painstaking analysis of the Jewish purity laws and the discussion of whether those purity laws apply today.

Amazingly eye-opening!,

This review is from: Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition (Paperback)
While over many, many generations, secular society has come to be more forbearing of the sexual nature of humanity, religious groups have long held a negative view on the topic.
Philo Thelos' book "Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition" is a profound revelation that gives a deeper insight to what many of us probably already knew deep down inside. When you where a child and somebody first told you that masturbation was dirty or a sin, you probably thought to yourself "why?," or when you where taught that seeing a nude scene in a movie was wrong, you may have figured "that doesn't make much sense". Well, this book plainly and simply addresses these obvious concerns and explains how man and not God has set so many of the rules we still misguidedly abide by today. It discusses how man has come to read things into scripture that simply are not there, how man has extended and distorted the meaning of words and phrases used in the Bible and how many quite simply miss the point. God gave humans the gifts of conscience and reason. Chances are, we didn't worry about such things as that they where not a problem for our conscience and did not go against reason until some well intentioned yet ill-advised authority figure pounded an inaccurate idea into our heads. I recommend this book to anyone who really cares to understand his or her faith rather than simply accepting everything you are told at face value. If you are a true Christian, this book is for you.

This is a well researched, honest approach to the taboo subject of sexuality in the Bible. It is written in everyday language, and easy to understand. Once you begin, you will not want to put it down. I challenge you to read it, research the scriptures and see if what he says is not so. Draw your own conclusions. I wish every preacher and Bible teacher in America would read this book and pass it on to someone. I found it most refreshing.

This review is from: Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition (Paperback)
This excellent book uses the scriptures to address what the bible says about sex. It challenges traditional views for those who will read it without predjudice. Author Thelos will open eyes to the question, is what the church teaching about the gift of sex what God intended? I highly recommend this book as a wonderful start to those wishing to delve into a study of this controversial subject.

As soon as I finished this book, I closed it and ponder about the author's scholarship and brutal honesty. Then rose up, and walked to my wife and told her you have to read this book and then we will talk about it. We usually discuss every book we read. This one, she will have to enjoy by herself. I do not want her to miss a single sentence!
The book is a rare gem of deep hidden biblical knowledge. As you read it you go through a catharsis of beliefs and ideas that will make you open your eyes and see the real falsehood of organized religion. It discusses sex in the biblical context in such a way that no preacher or priest will ever dare to do. The reading and thorough understanding of this book is a spiritual liberating experience because, it lift a lot of unjust guilty feeling out of the individual. Finally, someone explain to the individual the difference between, biblical law, church law (dogma) and law of man. Kudos to the author! |
