About the Author

Born and raised in Soprano Land, New Jersey. A professional musician at fifteen, Freddy (to his friends) has sat at table with Billie Holiday, joked with Dizzy Gillespie, drummed (badly) with Philly Joe Jones on a car's dash, and yacked with Miles Davis. Four years in the navy during Vietnam. Played Taps at Arlington Cemetery. Proofread at the L.A. Times. Worked the Texas oilfields and raised a pretty good line of pit bulldogs. He has at least half a dozen more novels to his credit and loads of screenplays. At present, he and his lovely wife Sherry live in Arizona, their two married sons in the neighborhood.

A thought-provoking and original take on some old themes. The writing was fresh and alive, drawing me into its moments. The characters seemed so real to me that I was in the same room with them. It was a book I'll return to from time to time, the book isn't quite through with me yet.

To write a book with such a strong theme is one thing but to bring about an attraction, a tension, perhaps sexual, between adversaries is another. This along with the very well executed changes in point of view shows that this is a very fine writer. He takes you on a ride of discovery of faith and it's near nemesis science all along entertaining you with a strong story of attraction and healing.

Never a dull moment, where the action slows, Maffei's beautifully written mystery keeps the momentum going. A suspense story that follows the story of Athiest writer Claire and mysterious ex-priest Dale. Sixteen years ago a child is born to his virgin mother. How might this happen? You only need to read to find out how and it is well worth the journey. Slowly unfolding when non-believer Claire agrees to take Dale's case, reparte and slight chemistry between the two ensues. She investigates, if only to debunk the theory of Jesus walking alive and well in a talented young teen the knee-jerk "athiest" that she is. But will she succeed?

The story would fall into the same genre as a Dan Brown novel, except there is as much emphasis on writing as there is on plot. In this sense, it is the perfect novel. A joy to read and I fully expect it to become wildly popular with readers, should they find this gem of a story, as I expect they will. Thumbs up for me.

What if Jesus Christ were raised in 21st century Los Angeles? Better yet, what if we had two? Divinely Smitten looks at the manipulation of good and evil and how to control or cultivate the divine. The story favors nurture over nature as we see godlike potential either enhanced by a good Priest’s fall from grace, or snuffed out by the most crass of modern men, in this case a step-father who art not in heaven. Even Jesus had to find his own way in the end.

Divinely Smitten reads a bit like Dan Brown and I can see this easily adapted into a screenplay.
