Great Dive Guide to Bonaire, January 26, 2012
This review is from: Diving Bonaire (Kindle Edition)
I've been to Bonaire many times over the years and both this guide and the previous editions by the same author have been excellent for me and others in my groups. I like that this book strikes a good balance between a guide that's short enough to read easily and quickly (and is fun to read) and conveying enough information for each of the dive sites. In reading this version of the guide, here were the things that stood out as different from other guides out there and would be really helpful for future readers:
1. This guide has a good and fun mix of info about the island (environment, history, industry) as well as helpful detail on things new Bonaire travelers wouldn't know to ask about: Nature fee, departure taxes, foreign transaction fees, greetings, attire, etc.
2. It's written really well with a light sense of humor and funny comments about the local animals such as donkeys, iguanas and flamingos.
3. As a dive guide, it gives great info on each of the sites with suggestions about currents and conditions, what to avoid and where (like fire coral), which animals are most prevalent, which sites are good for night dives, and even gives photo tips which are great if you're going to take pictures and aren't sure which lens you want to take with you that day. As a photographer, I really appreciate things like that - it's no fun to take your macro and have a large school of fish swim by. I like that there is just enough information on each site but not too much. It's easy to read about the site you're going to right before a dive and not have to remember the entire thing. Conditions always change with weather and time but this guide goes into just enough detail of what someone might expect to see without making any false claims about things you might see but aren't likely to ever find (not everyone finds the crocodile fish chasing the whale shark chasing the turtle).
4. The author seems to have spent a lot of time with the locals and going to the sites himself. This is very helpful as many guide books are written by people who go there once or twice and ask questions, but don't really get to know the place well. What I liked about this book was that it has little comments about customs and greetings and history that you wouldn't find out about if you were just a tourist. I'd never know about the obelisks before, for example, or how the salt production affects the rest of the island (like the dives near there).
This book is great companion for both new divers and experienced divers of Bonaire and has notes for snorkelers and visitors as well! Highly recommended!

Bonaire now, February 13, 2012
This review is from: Diving Bonaire (Kindle Edition)
Just returned from Bonaire a week ago, and the descriptions of the dive sites in this neat book are spot on. Read and then take the plunge! The general information in the introductory chapters is invaluable in planning and executing a trip to Bonaire, since there are some real challenges for even the experienced traveler. The expert info can easily save you pain, anguish and more money than the cost of the book.

Great to have an updated Bonaire dive guide, January 29, 2012
This review is from: Diving Bonaire (Kindle Edition)
I have the previous dive guide for Bonaire by George Lewbel, and I'm excited to have this updated guide. I enjoyed reading about the history of Bonaire and the local customs and culture. The summaries of the dive sites, including directions to get there are particularly helpful. Now that I have this new guide, I can't wait to get back to Bonaire - love the diving there!
