Other actors have their moments but I never felt they were as developed as Andy. Will Sasso and Adam Carolla have a funny running gag as sports reporters, and I wish there had been more of Mo Collins as the loopy president or dean of the small liberal arts college.
The problem with the film is that the main character, played by co-writer and director Marshall Cook, is that he's simply the Lead Character In A Sports Film. And an under-developed one at that. He at first comes across as lazy and cynical...and then he just walks through the rest of the film, ending up with a winning game and The Girl...and we're not sure why. I guess because he's the Lead Character In A Sports Film.
The film clings too tightly to a well-worn sports movie formula and several main characters are merely formula commitments, not hilarious comic creations.
But Andy is really funny in this.
a guy I have never even liked, but he had me rolling from the first
scene. He's just downright offensive... seriously!
You know the drill here, you've probably seen it before. The players
suck, the coach is an insane lunatic, they are used to losing, the team
gets worse, it looks hopeless. Then after a minor tweak, and the promotion
of the 3rd string QB, they miraculously start winning. And of course it all
comes down to the final game of the season against their hated rival where
it all comes down to a heroic final play. Who didn't see this coming?
I read where Marshall Cook, a former Div III QB himself, shot this movie
in 20 days and edited the entire thing on his laptop. And for that effort
he deserves major kudos. His performance however.... pretty dull to be honest.
If he was hoping to provide some contrast to Andy Dick's psychotic energy
then he sure got it. But the direction and editing were pretty good, so I
wouldn't say he doesn't have a future in film, it just wont be in front of a
