What's with these reviews?,
By Anon. (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Divorce: Causes and Consequences (Current Perspectives in Psychology) (Hardcover)
Is it just me, or do almost all of these reviews sound somewhat alike? And the vast majority are from California. They also sound somewhat superficial, so it's hard to tell what the book is really like. Is it good as a psychology volume, or a self-help book? Confusing.

Learn about the causes and consequences of divorce,
By Jessie Conner (Irvine, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Divorce: Causes and Consequences (Current Perspectives in Psychology) (Hardcover)
After reading Divorce: Causes and Consequences, you will gain new insight into divorce and learn how many of the myths and stereotypes we have about divorce are misleading. With current research and past backgrounds of divorce, the book swiftly moves from the history to the future of divorce in a compelling and easy to understand book. The book focuses on all aspects of divorce including legal proceedings, child support and even step families and remarriage. Anyone planning to get married or even going through a divorce should own a copy. I have recently passed this book to my friend who just got engaged. A great companion to this book is Divorce Lessons, by the same authors.

Most of these reviews were written for extra credit assignments,
This review is from: Divorce: Causes and Consequences (Current Perspectives in Psychology) (Paperback)
First of all, you'll notice that most of these reviews were written in December of 2006. Our professor, Cornelia Brentano, one of the authors of this book, used this book for her class in the winter quarter at The University of California, Irvine. We were given extra credit if we wrote a review on Amazon, printed it out, and turned it in for extra credit. We got as much extra credit for turning in a review as we did for writing a 5 page extra credit paper. So of course, many of us chose to write a review.
As for the book itself, it's below average for a text book. I found it a bit boring and repetitive at times. I can't really say I learned much, and it felt like they were just stating the obvious. Also, I don't think many of the facts or statistics that were given were true. They did not include citations when there should have been citations. Also, this book makes too many generalizations and stupid lists (like those business books for dummies). The book is written from a very Western viewpoint, and lacks cultural sensitivity. An update to this book would need to expand on the history of marriage and divorce to include other cultures and nationalities. Apparently, history begins with the Greeks and ends in the U.S. It's been a while since I took the class and read this book, but I hope you found this helpful.

This is very prcatical and helpful book to learn about not only divorce, but also marriage, including reasonable reason to marry, types of things to consider before marriage, marriage plan, relationships...on and on.
It is not like listing of theories and statistics, but very practical to learn something out of it. In addition, contents are very organized well, and easy to read. This is one of the book i would keep, and recommend to friends who are in relationship.

This book was a wonderful presentation of the functioning, or rather, disfunctioning of a marriage and how factors can lead up to a divorce. The book walks you through the reasons and factors that push individuals to divorce, also it describes the aftermath of the event and what happens to everyone involved.

A very thorough book about the hardships of divorce,

This review is from: Divorce: Causes and Consequences (Current Perspectives in Psychology) (Hardcover)
This book does an amazing job going through the entire process of divorce from start to finish. The book begins with the history of divorce and ends with the future of divorce. I can honestly say that I have learned so much just by reading this book. Clarke-Stewart and Brentano cover every aspect of divorce in a way that is easy to read and easy to understand. Their knowledge concerning risk factors and effects of divorce is very insightful. The authors do not give brief statements on the many topics of divorce, rather, they go in depth and include many different studies to support their conclusions. After reading this book, it really opened my eyes to what millions of adults and children have to endure because of divorce. It has also made me reevaluate what I want in a marriage and in my future partner. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Very helpful book.,

This review is from: Divorce: Causes and Consequences (Current Perspectives in Psychology) (Hardcover)
I recommend this book to anyone who has ever though about getting married at any point in their life. Although there is a plethora of information, the book itself is an easy read. Clarke-Stewart and Brentano present the topics in an organized and readily understood manner. This book provides useful knowledge pertaining to the causes and consequences of divorce. Even more helpful, are the suggestions provided for prevention and coping. As a college student, I would easily ignore this book on the shelves at a bookstore since I have no plans on getting married soon, let alone divorce. But, this book helps you question certain aspects in your life when dealing with relationships and learning more about yourself. Overall, this book provides great insight on the topic of divorce and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Review of: "Divorce, Causes and Consequences",
By
This review is from: Divorce: Causes and Consequences (Current Perspectives in Psychology) (Hardcover)
Prior to reading the literature found in this text I was unaware of so many risk factors and characteristics commonly associated with "at-risk" marital companions. Not to say that the book steers readers away from the idea of marriage, rather it highlights facts that everyone in a serious relationship should take into account upon entering a lifelong commitment. I feel that I have personally benefited from the material in this book and believe that anyone in a relationship or in a marriage needs to purchase this book. Understanding the evolutionary process of divorce, statistical facts regarding the subject and ways to avoid the dissolution of a marriage are key facts that can alter one's life and I feel that I am at an advantege after having read this text.

FOR ANYONE IN A RELATIONSHIP,
This review is from: Divorce: Causes and Consequences (Current Perspectives in Psychology) (Hardcover)
This book is a must. If you are in a relationship and considering marriage you should consider this book to be priceless. This book will help you see what may cause a divorce and how to avoid it in the first place. The book talks about the anatomy of a divorce and the emotions and complicated nature of divorce. Really even if your not in a serious relationship now this book will help you avoid a relationship that will likelly end in divorce. I think that people who read this book before marriage have a dramaticlly reduced divorce rate.

This book really puts things in a perspective. Not only has it made me reconsider what I really want in my current relationship, but it has also made me realize what I really want in a future partner. This text follows through with details the many causes and consequences of divorce, the risk factors involved, and how one may be affected as well as their children. I would recommend this book to anyone considering marriage in their future as well as those who are currently experiencing a divorce.
