Book Description

September 1, 1996
Psychologist Michael S. Prokop explains divorce in a positive and reassuring manner as he consicely disproves fourteen irrational false beliefs concerning divorce that often cause children and adolescents to feel anxious, guilty, nervous and depressed.

After each false belief the "parent's section" discusses important recommendations for divorcing parents.

The book takes the reader, step-by-step, from "false Belief" to "True Statement" as it discusses such critical issues as causes of divorce, parental problems and remarriage, living with one parent, fears of abandonment, living on less money, academic regression, mood swings, support people, and more.

Editorial Reviews

Review

" a well researched, highly recommended book which offers enormously helpful information concerning an increasingly dominant problem in contemporary America... it also speaks to the heart- the heart of an adult and a child. Empathy was a root nerve which was tapped as I journeyed through the book. May it help others in their journey. -- Rev. Guy Noonan, TOR, M.A., Roman Catholic Priest, Brooklyn, New York.

"This extraordinary book provides children with honest explanations for the many difficult issues they find themselves experiencing throughout the process of divorce. Prokop has written a book which may be used by members of the mental health profession, teachers, parents, and the clergy to facilitate the healing process and help children dispel false beliefs concerning -- The American Journal of Family Therapy, Vol. 18, No. 1 Cheryl A. Kendrick, M.S., Florida State University

"excellent...simple, but thorough-positive, but descriptive." -- Steve Garvey, divorced parent, former National League Baseball All Star, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book from the title down on., January 4, 2009
This review is from: Divorce Happens to the Nicest Kids: A Self Help Book for Kids (Paperback)
I remember reading this book to my daughter when she was just five. She was confused and unsettled. There is no better way to explain her that what is happening is normal, and not her fault at all. She felt special (what a great title!) She mentioned the book to her therapist, and she moved from there on with great positivity. I strongly recommend this book to the parent of a 4-5 year old children that starts the divorce process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing Book. Truly Helps, April 1, 2008
This review is from: Divorce Happens to the Nicest Kids: A Self Help Book for Kids (Paperback)
I was 5 years old when my parents divorced. And I didn't take it well. They eventually sent me to see a therapist. And while the therapist didn't really help (I honestly think he was crazier than I was), this book that he gave me did. It helps kids realize that the divorce isnt' their fault. They haven't been bad. That sometimes mom and dad just can't stand one another. Without the help of this book, I'm not sure how I would have turned out as a person. I was shocked, but incredibly pleased, to see it still in print. Still there to help a whole new generation.
