Incredibly informative!,
This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
Both my husband and I, made the decision to read the book together, yet independently. It was one of the best decisions we ever made. The insights gained from these pages literally pulled us out of a very trying time. We both absolutely loved it! After reading the book, both my husband and I understood (too late, unfortunately) why our first marriages hadn't worked out. This is our second marriage for both of us, but we are determined to succeed this time. We highly recommend this book to anyone considering marriage. Unlike many other books on the topic, there is no unnecessarily drawn out psychobabble, but is to the point. The description of the different kinds of couples, the high risk, the mismatched, and the perfect couples was incredibly interesting. All of a sudden I could understand some of the dynamics in the marriages of my friends and relatives, and, yes, our own too. We were able to see ourselves like in a mirror and have started making changes to become more authentic in how we live our marriage. It helps to know that we are not unique in the errors that we make and that there is hope. Best of all, is the concise advice. I almost wished there had been more of it but with the understanding gained from the stories and the commentary I get the point and I know what to do (and what not to do anymore).

Must Read for Adult Children of Divorce (and their Parents) and anyone divorcing.,
This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
I suggest the authors rename the book "All I ever need to know about divorce" not because it is better than the original title but because the book covers every important aspect of divorce in a very captivating way. The real life stories are amazing; they are like a candid camera into the average American family. This book, through the personal testimonies, allowed me to easily understand the specific facts and psychological processes that people go through when separating and divorcing. It is important for people to know that what they are experiencing is not abnormal and that other people have suffered in the same way. The book is full of descriptions of not only "how" people act before, during and after divorce but it explains the *why*. Understanding the underlying dynamics helps to see clearly and make changes. The book ends every chapter with clear, short, and useful suggestions that clearly show what to do and what not to do

This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
This is by far the greatest book ever for understanding the process of marriage, marital life, and divorce. This book is not only simplistic and very easy to understand, but also full of real life stories which anyone can relate to one way or the other. It also covers stories from all around the world from different customs and religions. This book is not just about divorce and it is not meant just for the people who are divorcing. It is actually the reality about marriage. I think for people who are engaged or thinking about marriage, this book is a must. I have already recommended this book to all my friends and I wish this book was available when I was getting married. A++ for this one

Very Helpful,

This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
This book was incredibly helpful to me as a child of divorce. The entire divorce process, from before the marriage to 30+ years after is told through the true stories of divorce. It has helped me to understand my own behavior in my own marriage where I am repeating my parents' bad example. It is a tremendously helpful and healing book to read. There is no judgment, just matter of fact narration of what goes on and how that fits with the current research on divorce. You learn all the important facts about divorce (and marriage) without even realizing it because you are sooo absorbed in the real life stories.

This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
The divorce process is a long and drawn-out one, and Divorce Lessons is a testament to that. It is easy to read, informative, and the student-written vignettes illustrate the complexities of marriage dissolution in a unique way. Although I read it for a class, it is by no means a typical textbook, and I plan on keeping it as a guidebook for the years to come. It ought to be read by anyone who could even potentially be married and/or divorced.

This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
This book was a wonderful depiction of real divorce. The book describes very sad and incredibly moving real life stories of the true victims of divorce. This book has made me rethink everything I thought about marriage and understand what divorce can do, not only to you and your spouse, but to innocent children. I think that everyone should have to read this before they get married, it shows you real consequences of not taking marriage seriously.

This book is different in that it provides the readers with the reality of what many people go through prior, during and after the divorce . this book is a highly recomanded, especially for those who plan to read "Divorce causes and consequences". each chapter provides information which is backed up with real stories from people who went through divorce. then at the end of the chapter there is a summery of things that need to be learned from those stories. This book makes it much more easier to actually understand the process of divorce.

this book is very interesting and impressive, because it is out of real life stories. Due to that, I could read it more seriously, and the stories made me think. At the same time, I could learn more about reality of marriage. this book is very helpful to understand all the theories and myth about marriage, and gives very thoughful ideas about how to construct marital relationship in the future.

Powerful Book,

This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
I thought this book was extremely powerful because the readers got to read real-life testimonies of the many people who suffered through the effects of a divorce. The fact that the stories were real made it so much easier for readers to really understand the heartache that people go through. This book really hits you hard and forces you to accept the harsh realities of divorce. You can really feel the emotions that the authors of each story are going through and it almost seems too painful to be real. I thought this book went really well with Clarke-Stewart and Brentano's other book "Divorce: Causes and Consequences" because while that book was filled with facts about divorce, this book let you peek into what happens in real life. I recommend this very powerful book to everyone.

The Struggles of Divorce on Real People,
By
This review is from: Divorce Lessons: Real Life Stories and What You Can Learn From Them (Paperback)
The bulk of Clarke-Stewart and Brentano's book consists of real-life stories from individuals who experienced the pains and struggles of their parents' divorce. These stories are truly gut-wrenching and tear-jerking, and the effects are felt! Clarke-Stewart and Brentano attempt to put a real face on the concept of divorce. Most people do not think that these things can happen, or that once they marry it is for good. These stories offer the reality of divorce, the hardships that are felt and can continue to linger decades after the actual separation. However, not all stories shed light on the potential hardships of a divorce. There are some that provide inspiration and advice, showing that people can triumphantly conquer these adversities.
These stories are extremely poignant, and force the reader to truly consider all the possibilities and potential problems before jumping into a marriage. My heart cries out for those who have suffered tremendously from selfish parents who involve their children in their adult disputes. However, as this book suggests, anything is attainable with the right mindset. This book was a true inspiration; I find myself repeating these stories to my friends and family, exposing them to the raw world of divorce as discovered in this book. For anyone starting a family, or thinking of marrying, PLEASE read this book. You, and your children, will definitely not regret it. |
