5.0 out of 5 stars The most inclusive book on divorce, October 12, 2005

This review is from: Divorce and Remarriage: What Does the Bible Really Say? (Paperback)
This book includes all references in the Bible about divorce and how the divorce and remarriage issue needs to be considered by the complete context of a Biblical view of God's forgiveness. It is a reference book that everyone who has been touched by divorce and remarriage needs to read. Most writers pick and choose passages to prove their point of view, but this writer includes all of the verses plus a historial backgroung for this book. It is also a very easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best I've Read on the Subject, September 9, 2002
By
This review is from: Divorce and Remarriage: What Does the Bible Really Say? (Paperback)
This book is the voice of sanity! Having read books on the subject of divorce and remarriage from the nonsensical viewpoint of the legalists, this book is like a breath of fresh air and common sense!

As a Christian in a healthy, happy marriage for 17 years, I was not looking for a book on divorce for my sake. The conventional translation/interpretation regarding NT verses on the subject don't seem to make much sense in light of what we know about the character of God through the incarnate Christ. All sin, including murder, can be forgiven, and grace can be extended to all but the divorced/remarried. So, if asked, we tell those in broken, unmendable marriages that they must remain in the marriages, but if they are already divorced/remarried, we accept them into the church and pretend not to notice the "elephant in the room." This book does an excellent job expanding on all the absurdities that must occur if we try to apply the traditional understand. It does an even better job explaining the full context of the Bible so that a better understanding is available. He doesn't delve much into the Greek and Hebrew meanings behind "putting away" and "certificate of divorcement," but other books are available, like "Divorce, A Gift of God's Grace," for further reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a blessing!, September 21, 2003
By
This review is from: Divorce and Remarriage: What Does the Bible Really Say? (Paperback)
This book is truly a blessing for those burdened by guilt and shame (some inflicted by others and some self-inflicted). Mr Woodrow, as is his style with his other books that I have read, uses clear, concise explanations to take us through the Holy Scriptures and cut through the legalists' self-righteousness to show our God for what He truly is: ever-faithful and ever-merciful. Thank you, Mr Woodrow, for being obedient to the Holy Spirit and writing this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book on a subject that has hurt many people, March 9, 2011

This is a better book than "Divorce...God's will?". If you are looking at both, get this one. The former book goes off the rails in several spots, notably regarding race, and the author of that book doesn't understand Hebrew language constructs, AT ALL (I speak/read/write Hebrew fluently). This one will cut to the heart of the matter very nicely, and makes a compelling argument. My first piece of advice to readers: "YOUR BIBLE WAS NOT ORIGINALLY WRITTEN IN ENGLISH". The defense, "but the bible says divorce right here", does not taken into account the doctrinal nature of translations. Most English translations have a fair amount of doctine injected into them, so that the very words you read are colored by those interpretations. Only if you take context, language, grammar and precedent into account can you get a full understanding of what was being spoken of. This book does a very good job of illustrating the absurdity of the divorce verses by applying the 'rules' used by legalists to other scriptures so you can see how much trouble you can get in by so doing.

Approach with an open mind. There ARE more terrible things than divorce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource!!, January 9, 2012

This book was sooo helpful to me! It uses alot of scripture, which is what I needed!

He gives very clear view points and covers alot of ground. Without this book and the points made in this book, I would still be very much confused and hurting. I feel free to move on with a clear conscience now, knowing I feel at peace with my situation.

I would highly recommend getting and reading this book if you have questions about any of the topics of the title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Trixi, January 3, 2012
This review is from: Divorce and Remarriage: What Does the Bible Really Say? (Paperback)
Writing this out of my normal character, but I guess divorce can have that effect. I really don't believe that anyone gets married only to get divorced 13 years later. But unfortunately, I was Mr. Trixi. But I was not Trixi's first husband. I would assume that if this book addresses the idea of whether "remarriage" is sinful in the eyes of God, then it would not fall to me, "the recent husband", but to the first spouse. I was also previously married and had this same discussion with a friend, but I praise God that I understand that His intentions for us were never meant to be burdensome, nor are we to look for loopholes in His intentions to justify our selfishness.(Like the Pharisees who sought divorce for "any reason")
When people hear "So and so LEFT me, it's usually assumed that the "leaver" was totally wrong to do so. Due to the pain of that exclamation, the context is hardly ever sought out. It's well and fine (even necessary) to mourn with those who mourn, but if you really care, there is usually a truth to the matter. Truth needs to be sought, but not at the sake of care & sympathy. Divorce is always a sad matter.
I do hope that this book in addition to the Word of God helps broken people be made whole. I moreso hope that our testimonies can really help to prevent marriages coming to an end in the first place.

This review is from: Divorce and Remarriage: What Does the Bible Really Say? (Paperback)
I wished, I had this book right in front of me and could quote some of the chapters and insights I have learned.
However, I have passed my book along to a friend who is also going through divorce.
My husband has left me recently and one of the things that were a stumbling block were some of the views that I had about myself and the questions that noone would address. Am I an adulteress now that he has left me? Can I ever get into another relationship again with the prospect of being married or am I going to be married in God's eyes to my Ex for the rest of my life? All these and more questions were going through my mind and this book has addressed them ALL. It gave me a Biblical perspective and helped me heal in a very special way. Of course this book is not the Bible. Some people might argue to just look at the Bible and get answers there. I would argue that there are so many scripture passages that pertain to separation, divorce, and remarriage that I knew and I personally didn't have a great understanding of them. If we look at the Bible we have no choice but to read it in its entirety and understand the historical and cultural context. A person doesn't need to read this book and believe all that is said in it, but one can take the claims of this book as a starter to study out the topic of divorce for themselves. Look up the scripture passages, go deeper, and find resolution. This book helped me to forgive my Ex and move on with life. I would highly recommend it and yes, look at it with a skeptical eye. God wants the best for all of his children.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Controversial Book, March 7, 2006
By
This review is from: Divorce and Remarriage: What Does the Bible Really Say? (Paperback)
This book is easy to read and is a serious Bible student's commentary on the Bible's teaching about divorce and remarriage. The author has obviously done some serious thinking on these subjects, and is well-versed in Bible knowledge.

While the subjects of divorce and remarriage are controversial, even within the Christian community, the author, an evangelist, is not afraid to tackle the subject. This book should be read by anyone seeking to know the Bible's teaching on this matter, whether they agree with the author's conclusions or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject, December 10, 2007
This review is from: Divorce and Remarriage: What Does the Bible Really Say? (Paperback)
This book gives a balanced look at the subject of divorce and remarriage. Thank goodness someone out there understands that a marriage can die, and that it is not an unforgivable sin to divorce and remarry.
