Book Description

June 19, 2006
Ellie sat under Harold’s tree with Harold perched on her shoulder. They were trying their best to figure out why Daddy had left and why they had to sell their home. Was it their fault Daddy didn’t want to live with them anymore? They tried to stay out of trouble but things just happened. They didn’t mean to do anything wrong. The mean old judge had called them divorced. Harold was very smart for a squirrel but he had never heard of this thing called divorce. Penny didn’t know how to explain things to Ellie. She didn’t understand why Dennis had changed. He had moved out demanding that they sell their home and get a divorce. All Penny did know was she loved her daughter with all her heart and she wasn’t about to separate Ellie and Harold. She would just have to find a house with a tree for Harold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looking forward to more of Ellie and Harold, July 3, 2006
This review is from: Divorced at Six (Paperback)
The story kept my interest as to what was going to happen next and how Ellie would handle the divorce of her parents. Harold was an interesting yet helpful friend who she could tell her problems. Hope to hear more of Ellie and Harold in their new homes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Squirrels Talk Too!, October 3, 2006
This review is from: Divorced at Six (Paperback)
Divorced at Six" is a delightful read about a mischievous little girl named Ellie, her special squirrel friend she calls Harold, a mom and dad in the throes of an ugly divorce. Ellie tells all her troubles to Harold and he actually talks back to her, although Ellie is the only one who understands his lingo. Ellie's mother, Penny, accepts the talking squirrel; her father, Dennis, thinks a pet squirrel who talks is nonsense.

Truthfully, Dennis is not a very nice man, but as the story progresses, we learn he is struggling with problems at work which make him unreasonable and angry at the world. Meanwhile, Penny puts their house up for sale and tries to deal with Dennis. Ellie is worried that moving to a new house will leave Harold homeless.

But Nanny Doodle doesn't let that happen and introduces us to a charming "old south" gent named Red who has a wonderful big house for sale with lots of trees for Harold to choose from.

Nanny is a gifted storyteller who weaves her characters together with emotion and humor, even a few tears. She has an uncanny insight into a little girls' mind. We find ourselves believing that squirrels do indeed listen and talk to children. There are great dialogue sequences between Penny and Dennis, and Red and his two ladies: Penny and Ellie. Nanny proves that happiness can be found after divorce--even for a squirrel.
