5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente novela
Fabulosa...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The only book of Hungarian author Sandor Marai I have read before this one was "Eszther's Inheritance", which I regarded it highly. So I have high expectations for this one. Fabulosa historia, a mi juicio.

The only book of Hungarian author Sandor Marai I have read before this one was "Eszther's Inheritance", which I regarded it highly. So I have high expectations for this one. Unfortunately, Divorce in Buda disappointed me (I read it in a Spanish translation, I don't know if there is an English translation). It basically tells the life of a judge in a divorce court in Hungary during the interwar years. He is a man in his thirties, dour and formal, coming from a family of lawyers. The first part of the book is the description of the judge, his family and life so far, and is quite fine. One day, a case involving the divorce of a couple he knows somewhat reaches the court. The night before the day he has to make a decision on the case, the husband comes into his house unexpectedly and uninvited, claiming he just has killed his soon to be divorced wife. The judge decides to listen to him, and the second part of the book is the man's long winded, somewhat confusing rant, trying to explain and justify his action. Thus the book ends in a disappointing tone, though it does show Marai's pessimistic view of life.
