4.0 out of 5 stars dixie carter is amazing and funny
This album of Wallowitch's music is really amuzing at times and very funny. If you like the antics of Julia Sugarbaker, on Designing Women, you'll love imagining her singing these songs in typical Julia style., especially since Dixie Carter, ( the star of the album), will always be the one and only " Julia Sugarbaker". This album is a hoot and Dixie carter...

She certainly looks the part, but doesn't sound it. I know a cabaret singer doesn't need to have a "perfect voice" --- well Ms. Carter certainly doesn't. The problem is that her voice is actually difficult to listen to. She may be able to sell the song onstage, but on a recording, her poor voice is so distracting, I couldn't enjoy any emotion she may have...

5.0 out of 5 stars Diamond in the Rough, April 19, 1999

Who'd of guessed that the star of "Designing Women" could be so successfully adept at keeping a one woman cabaret act by a quite lesser known composer so beguiling. John Wallowitch serves up 17 memorable songs on this live recording of Dixie Carter's sharp humor and wonderfull singing voice before a small and intimate audience, where you think that the next song couldn't be more clever, original or catchy. But they succeed. And for a special treat, Wallowitch even joins Dixie for a few numbers. Songs like "I'm 27", "Florida", "Cheap, Decadent Drivel" and "Frog and Toad" are the kind that stay in your mind, not so much to an irritating point where you may sing them all day, but rather when you hear them, you smile at the rememberance of the tune. I would recommend this to any person who is a fan of Miss Carter, or just likes good ol' fashion ballads that couldn't sound more like they were born in Tennessee.

This is BY FAR the best CD that you will hear in a LONG time! I don't think a CD can top this one actually! If you're a Dixie Carter fan, BUY IT! If you're a John Wallowitch follower... BUY IT, if you just love well written music with amusing lyrics... BUY IT! Dixie Carter has a beautiful and angelic voice, and with John Wallowitch's music, it just adds even more light and love to it! I guess to sum it up this CD has Dixie Carter with the pizzazz and the lyrics to keep you laughing long after you've heard them!

I think it's interesting that most of the reviews mention how funny the album. True, but many of the songs are very touching, such as "Florida", "Come a Little Closer", and "Will There Really Be a Morning". I bought the album because I wanted a Wallowitch album, and this one came up. It's now one of my favorites. "Florida" has an interesting subject which is rarely the subject of songs: when empty-nesters face a vacant house, and decide to pack up and move south. Even on the decidedly funny songs, such as "I'm 27" (which mentions Sylvestor Stallone and Goldie Hawn, so it must be funny), at the end Carter gives it a poignant twist because obviously, she wasn't 27 while singing it. In the patter with Wallowitch she mentions that he was her voice teacher right after she moved to New York; the album is a tribute to them both.

5.0 out of 5 stars brillant, funny, sexxxy and lovely, September 4, 2007

johns' words and music performed by dixie are almost as much fun as john doing them himself. we saw this live...what a great treat the evening was. (bobby was on one of his vacations from his room and who ever chose this fabulous replacement deserves 5 stars). dixie was absolutely brillant, funny, sexxxy and lovely. ...and hey, now you can be there (almost) to enjoy dixie & john and save a bundle on the cover & minimum.

The problem is that her voice is actually difficult to listen to. She may be able to sell the song onstage, but on a recording, her poor voice is so distracting, I couldn't enjoy any emotion she may have been putting into her music.

Her vibrato is so wide someone could actually jump through it. I found myself cringing. Now, perhaps her acting abilities helped during her live show ... but, it doesn't translate to this recording. Certainly not enought to make it worth buying
