Book Description

March 1994
A Dixie Farewell chronicles the lives of University Of Mississippi football Player Roy Lee "Chucky" Mullins and Vanderbilt University fullback Brad Gaines and the heartrending account of the "hit" which brought them together. Gains and Mullins are presented as disparte forces - Mullins from a poor black family and Gaines from a middle class white background - and how their lives became meshed through the hardships that they must face. While the story ends with the tragic death of Chucky Mullins, it is nonetheless a tale of undying courage, indelible spirit, and the determination of two very special young men.

"Sometimes a story rises out of the whirling sports maelstrom and shines over the games we play with deeper meaning. A Dixie Farewell is one such story." -- Rick Telander, Sports Illustrated

"You don't have to be a football fan to appreciate this touching story about how times and values have changed in the Old South. Thanks to Larry Woody"s book, Chucky Mullins will be with us a long time." -- William F. Reed, Senior Writer, Sports Illustraed

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story About Character, Courage and Determination, October 26, 1998
This review is from: A Dixie Farewell: The Life and Death of Chucky Mullins (Hardcover)
A book really comes alive when it's about someone you knew. Mr. Woody did a wonderful job in bringing out Chucky's finest qualities: courage, determination, friendliness, and his ability to overcome lifes obstacles. And, since this book was about more than just Chucky and tells a wonderful life-story, it adds meaning and another dimension to the great person I went to high school with. This book should be required reading for all high school students, especially athletes. Thumbs Up, Mr. Woody!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dixie Farewell: The Life and Death of Chucky Mullins, December 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Dixie Farewell: The Life and Death of Chucky Mullins (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book. It tells the true story of a college football hero. This book exudes the inspiration, thoughtfullness, and love that Chucky shared with so many people before his passing.

3.0 out of 5 stars okay, but ..., January 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Dixie Farewell: The Life and Death of Chucky Mullins (Hardcover)
The book in in good condition BUT I would not have purchased it because it had a personal, handwritten book dedication inside the front cover. I would have preferred "discovering" highligher markings as to discovering an unremovable, personal note on the hard cover inside the book! The fact that it was there should have been told in the description, I feel.
