"This was the Jazz Age.", August 12, 2009
This review is from: Dixieland Jazz (Audio CD)
Dixieland Jazz is a ten CD box set of 200 recordings by various artists recorded mostly in the 1920s and issued by Membran in a sturdy cardboard box which,as is traditional for these sets, has no liner notes. no personnel and no recording dates.
Each of the ten CDs is encased in a sturdy cardbard sleeve with the titles, the artists and the times correctly printed on the sleeve. In this case, at least, there are quite a few tracks that are unfamiliar to me and some liner notes with a bit more explanation for these 200 tracks would have been very helpful.
Titles included are tracks such as Sobbin' Blues by King Oliver, Kater Street Rag by Bennie Moten's KC Orchestra, Cannon Ball Blues by Jelly Roll Morton and his Red Hot Peppers and 197 more. I have to admit most of these tracks are unfamiliar to me. Even some of the familiar titles are done by artists other than the old familiar versions which makes this bargain priced box set a container of constantly different discoveries.
The Dixieland Jazz title for this set is unfortunate, it should have been named Traditional Jazz, the ironic name for the once revolutionary music of the roaring teens and twenties, embraced by flaming youth across the globe.
So the sound is okay, the music is rife with new discoveries, at least for me,
and the price is more than fair, usually anyway.
Tell me what more you could want if you'e looking for the traditional revolutionary music that roared through the world of the 1920s and beyond. If this music is to your
taste you will have no regrets about buying this potent box of Jazz Age dynamite.

Great set!, September 19, 2009
This review is from: Dixieland Jazz (Audio CD)
Excellent music, if you like traditional Jazz. Not really Dixieland, as has been pointed out.
Couple of comments: there's a distinct hiss on many of the songs, especially on the earlier CDs. Not surprising.
Also, the cardboard sleeves make for a very tight fit. Okay if you take the CDs out once and add them to your digital music library, but for everyday use, you might want to find a different home for them.
Great value on the Amazon Marketplace -- works out to 10 cents a song!
