My first question was where the heck did the name Ticonderoga came from? It sounds a bit Italian to me, so I did my research to satisfy my curiosity. What I found out was, the inventor got the name from the French built Fort Ticonderoga in New York, where his father fought. Originally, Ticonderoga pencils where from New Jersey and was made in USA. Now they are mostly made from Asia, Germany, France, Italy, Latin America.

We recently switched to these pencils after having some inconsistent results from a generic company being offered by our supplier. We do drafting for electrical, mechanical and plumbing here and we use the red carmine all the time for drawing mark-ups. These pencils are excellent in quality. The wood is soft and easy to sharpen. The red leads are not too hard or too soft. They are always well balanced inside the tube. You don't get those leads that are off center which is a sign of bad quality pencils.

The only thing I notice is that it still not very easy to erase if you need correction and that is even with the supplied eraser on its tip.

They say these things are for checking things off on a paper document, but I got these to see how they compare the similar Prismicolor Col-Erase colored pencils, and they work really well! I was hoping it would be similar to the light blue color for those pencils. It's a little darker than that pencil, but there are two reasons why that's nice. 1: It hold back a little more than the light blue prismicolor. Meaning it shows up better with some distance away from the paper. So you don't have to squint or bring your head closer to the paper as much as with the light blue prismicolor. 2: It has the same effect when scanning it. Anyone who does cartoon and comic inking knows that the ink lines need to scan in cleanly on either a strait black and white or line art setting on a scanner, and this pencil does it just as nicely as the prismicolor equivalent. No more erasing pencils on your drawings!

Now there is a minor quibble I have with these pencils but it's actually goes for most other erasable colored pencils, and that's sharpening. With an electric sharpener you won't have much of a problem, but for on the go manual sharpener, they tend to not have as easy of a time as regular graphite and many sharpeners will just break the tips off the lead. They also wear down sharpeners so it might be a good idea to stock up on the one you find that does the job, Also keeping an exacto knife and/or sand paper to sharpen it with would also be a good choice.

So yea, really good pencil and I recommend it.

Remember 3rd grade? Remember Mrs. Smith handing you a paper that had been corrected with red pencil? Remember how your day could be made or crushed by the amount of red that was on your paper? These are the pencils. They are great for editing and correction.

I use these for editing and grading. The erasing is not as good as with a regular graphite pencil, so don't expect too much. The texture of the "lead" is somewhat like plastic, so the writing is not as bold as with a red pen. I simply find Ticonderoga pencils the most comfortable and durable -- a pencil that actually lasts until it's two inches long before breaking. Having a version that I can use for editing and grading is a nice plus.

another great Ticonderoga product, bought red and blue from Ticonderoga and yellow from Prismacolor... no discernable difference. Choose Ticnderoga or Prismacolor over Charles Leonard, Inc. erasable checking pencils, CL pencils tore up while sharpening! Will always stay with Prismacolor and these Ticonderoga from now on!

These are excellent red marking pencils, as red marking pencils go. They hold a point well and sharpen nicely. They erase as you might expect a red pencil to erase, which is "mostly".

I did notice they were made in Mexico, which kind of disappointed me since I bought them thinking Ticonderoga was an American brand. The wood is a very nice cedar-type wood that sharpens very nicely and smoothly. I recently bought some Chinese pencils with really inferior hardwood that is difficult to sharpen and leaves a ragged wooden point. So I'm glad at least that they didn't cheapen the wood when they moved to Mexico.

I did have one pencil in this pack that had a bad lead in it that kept breaking until I got it down about a third of the way, but the other pencils seem fine so far.

These have been my go-to pencils for proofreading manuscripts; they are easy to grip, sharpen in a flash, and write smoothly and without the brittleness that I've seen with other lead pencils. Best of all, the lead isn't too hard, which would make its red marks difficult to read. The pencils themselves are solid performers. My only quibble is with the eraser tips, which don't do a great job; they're overly stiff and end up rubbing the paper away. My recommendation would be to pair this with a gum or mars eraser.
