5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing little design
I don't know what the one reviewer expects from a "mechanical" pencil unless they want to sharpen a 7mm lead. But different strokes for different folks. I have been trying these and they are amazing. I'm surprised at how well they work.

Okay ... so what do you do when they DON'T write, right out of the package? I bought my son a set of 3 from walgreens ... only one of them worked. At least when a pencil breaks you can sharpen it ... or with a mechanical pencil you can advance the lead. When these don't work they just don't WORK. Two out of three went into the trash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Pencil Ever!, October 26, 2005
This review is from: Dixon(R) Ticonderoga(R) SenseMatic Mechanical Pencils, 0.7 mm, Yellow Barrel, Box Of 12 (Office Product)
I know, big claim. These mechanical pencils automatically feed the pencil lead - no clicking, never a "dry" stroke (until all the lead is gone!). The 0.7mm lead writes extremely well. Since I hate the waste of a disposable yellow shell, I buy lead refills and add one manually by pulling the tan-colored cone off the bottom, usually until the eraser is used up.

I'm unsure why they're so hard to come by these days. It could be because they have problems manufacturing - the tan cone often has splits in it.

This is the best mechanical pencil I've ever found! I don't know where it came from - just appeared on my desk at my office one day and I fell in love with it the moment I used it. I don't understand the negative reviews of this product at all. I'm a bookkeeper and its perfect for me! I do agree with other reviewers, however that I can't seem to find them anywhere. I know I'm keeping mine in a secret hiding place in my desk so someone else doesn't grab it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Pencil, but Hard to Find, February 8, 2008

This is the best pencil I've ever used. I've already purchased 3 dozen of them from Office Depot and have never had a problem with any of them. I can't understand the negative reviews, but my only issue is that none of the office supply stores have been stocking this item so I'm relying on my most reliable resource - Amazon.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teacher's Dream, January 28, 2008
This review is from: Dixon(R) Ticonderoga(R) SenseMatic Mechanical Pencils, 0.7 mm, Yellow Barrel, Box Of 12 (Office Product)
I have banned mechanical pencils from my classroom-- all the clicking, snapping and time-wasting that drives teachers nuts. Then I discovered these wonderful pencils, and now, all the teachers at my school want them for their classes. The lead lasts a long time and I find it easy to refill by pulling off the eraser end and inserting lead through the narrow hole inside. The kids really like them, too.

I absolutely love these pencils. They never have to be sharpened and they are perfect for doing crossword puzzles. I ordered them online because I can no longer find them in the stores.

4.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable! The most innovative design for a mechanical pencil., December 31, 2009

This pencil automatically extends the lead by itself. You do not need to click any buttons or rotate a mechanism to extent the lead.

I really like this pencil! I bought a lifetime supply of this model and its sibling product the "99995" model because the manufacturer has discontinued them...too bad. However, I think my small supply may outlast me.

If taken care of, it'll be a very reliable mechanical pencil. Although the tip is durable, it can be damaged that renders it useless. So you need to protect the tip. I recommend covering it with an ink pen cover if storing it in a pack-pack, purse, and such. If storing it in a cup (like many people do), keep the tip upwards. Pressing too hard may damage the tip too. And don't use your finger to play with the tip.

Start with easy pressure so you'll get used to the way it writes and appreciate how it works. It uses normal leads used by all mechanical pencils. One lead has already lasted about fifty pages for me and has not ran-out.

It's perfect for practicing mathematics, the sciences, and even general purpose writing. The one lead will easily outlast the eraser, so plan on getting erasers that fit over the top because the existing eraser cannot be replaced.

The mechanism at the tip of the pencil has some action that can seem unpleasant, and requires a period of adjustment on the behalf of the user. The action is in the form of sliding up into the barrel that produces a spongy feel instead of a firm, solid feel.
