There are so many things I love about Lunch Money. Each song on the albums Silly Reflection and Dizzy feels like a beloved friend, all with their own personalities. The music travels from style to style, hitting all the best parts in danceworthy rock, jazz vocals, punk, and quiet, contemplative, putting-your-life-to-a-soundtrack languour. My almost-two-year-old son and I have great fun singing and moving to it. As if the music itself weren't enough of a treat, Molly Ledford's lyrics are the most delicate poetry that manages to take its place in our daily lives rather than remain in a yellowed volume somewhere. She bemusedly investigates language ("do you go bananas? or do you go pears?"); pop culture ("keep on truckin'",dinosaurs on pajamas); childhood ephemera that nevertheless becomes the most long-lived mythology in an adult life (dropping Barbie shoes down the register, taming a balloon, sheets so old they feel like silk); and the secret thoughts and associations of a child that are the best stuff, in fact, of poetry (the wonder of an umbrella, reading that "feels like love"). Thanks for sending one of the wayward balloons to the Empire State, Molly!
Lunch Money makes children's music not by condescending in an adult's conception of a child's "gibberish," but by talking to a child in his/her own language and perspective. That makes this music fun and relevant for a child who sings along. And when it's done right, as it is here, how absolutely renewing, inspiring, and luminous it is for the adult who listens with love, chin propped on palm.

I love this record and play it for my 9month old daughter nearly every night before, during and after bath time. Her favorite songs are "It only takes one night to make a balloon your friend" and "Are you a rabbit?". The music is good and the songs are sweet and often touching. They make my baby happy and I am so happy that we are already sharing music.

I believe the album jumped from nowhere to #103 on March 7th 2009 and further up to #61 on the 8th is largely due to NPR All Things Considered favorable review this past Friday, the 6th. I enjoy it myself, so does my son. This is just a great idea appreciated by a lot of people. Well done, Lunch Money! Well done, Stefan Shepherd!

Literally: you should hear this.
I can't say much that the other reviewers haven't said already -- you won't find better songwriting in contemporary pop music -- regardless of genre, adult or kids -- than Molly's. "Silly Reflection" and "Dizzy" are both great albums. I can't wait for their next.

I listen to this one even after the kiddo is asleep. The songs are smart and funny. They have catchy tunes without being annoying. My son loves to listen to Tiny Dinosaurs and roar along. I don't allow Barney or The Wiggles at my house, but Lunch Money is always welcome!

I bought this CD as a Christmas gift for Aunt who has two little kids (3 and 6). She just called me to tell me how much she loves it. The kids love all the songs and I guess it has been on constant play for the last couple months. She said the best thing about it is she actually likes the music herself. Unlike most kids music it doesn't grind on the nerves. Everyone wins :)

Couldn't possibly love this more. Intelligent, cheeky, and fun. My kids and I are hooked.

Heard them on NPR, was sold out had to wait. Finally got a copy and the kids sing these songs every day in the car. Love it.

We are pretty active pedestrians however we do have to drive on ocassion. Now when drive we keep this cd in constant rotation. I have a blast watching my toddler sing along to Tiny Dinosaurs and Are You a Rabbit?. I heard about this group on NPR and now I hope to find more from them. Thank you for "seeing eye to eye".

Too often music targeted to children is either veiled naughtiness or sanitized anti-septic boredom. I think this album celebrates youth and all it's simple splendor; whether its singing about a tiny dinosaur or eating a cookie as big as your head. My kids (ages 8 and 3) love it and joyfully sing along with it in the car.
