Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Adapted by Hudlin from the first draft of Tarantino’s screenplay of the same name, Django Unchained is the rare case of a comic following a feature film. In case you’re not already familiar with the iconic director’s latest revenge fantasy, Django Unchained follows a slave named Django in the years leading up to the Civil War as he is freed by a German bounty hunter, Dr. King Shultz, who needs Django to identify his former owners, who are wanted dead or alive. In exchange for Django’s help, Schultz agrees to help him find his indentured wife and take on the warped plantation owner who owns her. Fans of Tarantino’s wordy banter will be pleased to find it intact and tucked among the panels. Though it echoes the film, Hudlin’s careful adaptation wrestles free thanks to the gritty, western-themed art, particularly from Guera. At its best, this collection provides an insightful look into Tarantino’s scripting process. Fans of Guera’s Scalped will be drawn to Django’s exciting, revenge-filled brutality. --Ben Spanner --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

About the Author

Quentin Jerome Tarantino is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and actor. He has received many industry awards, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA and the Palme d'Or and has been nominated for an Emmy and Grammy.

Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Tarantino was an avid film fan. His career began in the late 1980s, when he wrote and directed My Best Friend's Birthday. Its screenplay would form the basis for True Romance. In the early 1990s, he began his career as an independent filmmaker with films employing nonlinear storylines and the aestheticization of violence. His films include Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill (2003, 2004), Death Proof (2007), Inglourious Basterds (2009), and the upcoming Django Unchained (2012).

Based on the 2012 film of the same name, DJANGO UNCHAINED is a slavery revenge fantasy in the vein of previous Tarantino movies, namely INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (Holocaust revenge) and KILL BILL (rape revenge). Caught after an unsuccessful escape attempt, slaves Django and his wife Broomhilda are auctioned off to separate bidders. Whereas Hildi finds herself in the clutches of Calvin Candy - a self-proclaimed Francophile who is as rich as he is evil - Django is eventually acquired by Dr. King Schultz, a dentist-turned-bounty hunter. Schultz offers Django his freedom in return for his help identifying and killing the Brittle brothers, who were employed as overseers by Django's previous owners. (Naturally, Django can't believe his luck: killing white men, and getting paid for the privilege? Sign me up!)

Touched by Django's love for Hildi (and compelled by his hatred for "the flesh trade"), the German-born Schultz takes Django on as a partner and apprentice. The two spend the winter training together, while Django earns the money to buy Hildi's freedom. Come spring they make the journey to Candyland, ostensibly to buy a slave for the purposes of Mandingo fighting. When their ruse is discovered by the "head" house slave Stephen (power being relative), everything goes sideways, as they say.

Since the graphic novel is adapted from the original script, it contains some new material - including a number of scenes featuring Broomhilda. I'm pretty bummed that these were cut from the movie, as they helped to better flesh out her character, which mostly functions as an archetype of the damsel in distress. Not that this isn't in some ways a step up from how women of color are portrayed on screen - but still, I would have liked to have gotten to know Hildi better as a person.

This book is just beautiful... this book is the uncut version of Tarantino's script so there's new material and new things to read about. Defiantly check it out if you love the film or love to read comics!!

As a Quentin Tarantino fan I tend to like most of the things he creates. This is an exceptional piece of work wether you are a fan or not. The drawings are amazing, the dialogue does not change from the film and the fact that they included scenes that were cut from the film for length purposes makes this an amazing graphic novel. My neighbor does not like Quentin's work at all and even he admired the work put into this adaptation of the full script.

This is not the screenplay of the movie, but a comic book of the film. (For those who may misunderstand the product as I did). It is a nice gift for a fan of the film. Very well done.
