Review

This is modern horror at its finest - slick, cinematic, suspenseful and exciting - Simon Corbin, author of Love Gudrun Ensslin

This was probably one of the most intense, scary and heart breaking books I have ever read - Cali Girl book reviewer

This is a horror story that crept under my skin and had me torn between my urge to turn the page, and my fear of reading it in the middle of the night. - Sessha Batto, author of Shinobi

I read Djinn in one day - Poppet kept the tension and suspense at a level that kept me turning page after page - JE Taylor, author of the Steve Williams thriller series.

From the Author

If you were gripped by thrillers like Poltergeist, you will enjoy Djinn.

Djinn is far more than a devil, or a genie. He's a book that psychologically toys with his prey, opening them up for possession, and flinging them around when they don't do as he demands.

The exorcism doesn't work, the violence escalates, and it's a roller coaster ride to death.

In command of biblical dice, divination has never been this dangerous.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stuff Nightmares are made of!! August 27, 2011
By Rayven
Format:Kindle Edition
I was very intrigued wit the title of this book, Djinn by Poppet. This title stirs up images of Genies and magic carpet rides, but there is a much darker side that the world forgets. In this book Poppet captures the true darkness that haunts us all in the ancient myth of the Djinn.

Her story follows Cindy and Sasha; Cindy a young woman who has a love of the occult and books. Her thirst for knowledge takes her to her favorite bookstore where she finds Sasha, who is the key to her destruction and survival, he gifts her with a book that will change their lives forever. As a lover of books, the idea that something can be "caught between the pages" so to speak was very disturbing. The horror of this story is right up there with the "Exorcist", and quite a few times I found myself feeling the same uneasy feeling I had when I read that book for the first time. This tales is classic horror with a "Devil in disguise" feeling that will spawn nightmares.

This tale is well written ; the author has a very subtle way of writing horror that sneaks up on you and allows your own imagination to thrust you into the depths of hell. Though I did feel very disoriented reading the story with the different POV, which left me guessing and trying to get back on track. I realize now that this style of writing put me right into the story. I was feeling what Cindy was feeling as her life spiraled out of control as something more powerful and dark took over her life. At the time of reading, I did not like was the use of different faiths that Sasha sought out to try and find a way to help Cindy. But in hindsight it brings to light that in desperate times people will do whatever it takes to save the ones they love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly disturbing . . . in the best way July 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The first words that come to mind when talking about Djinn are profoundly disturbing. This is a horror story that crept under my skin and had me torn between my urge to turn the page, and my fear of reading it in the middle of the night. This is horror at its finest, the kind that has you jumping at every sound. I particularly appreciated Poppet's portrayal of Cinn's deterioration, the whipcord POV between two entities warring in the same body left me feeling as disoriented as Cinn must have been, which really put me into the story. If you want a truly immersive tale of the occult, look no further. Djinn will leave you wondering what you might have invited in to your own life, and keep you looking over your shoulder for weeks to come.

I read Djinn in one day - Poppet kept the tension and suspense at a level that kept me turning page after page. It is an interesting and frightening take on the djinn lore.

I'd recommend it to all those supernatural buffs out there looking for a new twist.

Be careful what you wish for...

From The Book Shelf Blog Book of the Week 6/20/11:

"Cindy's life changes the minute she receives the book Djinn from Sasha. Within hours the forces of darkness infiltrate her life, forcing them to run for their lives.

Sasha doesn't know it's her he has to save, because evil hides in the strangest places."

This is the description of Djinn (Gemma and Poppet, Kindle Edition, 2011), the newest and best horror Poppet has written. We are taken into a thrilling, murky, and horrifying tale of what begins with Cindy's favorite bookstore owner giving her a book, but just not any book.

Though Cindy has a taste for the occult, Djinn is the most mysterious kind she encounter. She knows this book is special, yet there is some unknown force which prevents her from experiencing the Djinn's magic. She is taken through a scary, dark, and intense journey.

Djinn is written in a style that is indeed Poppet's signature for the horror genre. Spine-tingling, intense, hair-raising, can't-put-down-the-Kindle, breathless and unique are just a few terms accurate in describing this book.

With its plot twists and turns, brilliantly written cautionary tale, and vivid characterization, Djinn is no question Poppet's biggest horror hit to date. If you aren't familiar with her work, there is no better time to begin than with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Djinn June 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Say the word genie, and most people think of the blue character voiced by Robin Williams from the movie "Aladdin", or perhaps the old TV show "I dream of Jeannie. They're both images that bring back pleasant memories. In Aladdin, we have a big, blue, fast-talking goofball with a heart of gold who grants wishes designed to help the hero achieve his noble goals. In I dream of Jeannie, we have a sexy, naive, blonde bombshell in a skimpy outfit who wants nothing more than to please her master.
Who could be a better role to kids than a big blue mentor nudging them along in a positive direction? Who could fulfill a man's fantasies more than a sexy blonde granting unlimited wishes? They are enticing images, but oh so very misleading.
In this book, Poppet writes of the real genie, the Djinn.

Cindy works in the Portland Central library. She's young, vulnerable and searching for truth to give her life meaning. She has a friend named Sasha who owns a small bookstore and they share a fascination with books. So when Sasha pulls out an old book he's come into possession of, Cindy has to have it. It turns out the book 'has' her as well. And as far as who is in possession of what, that's also up in the air. We are introduced to Djinn, the history and the sources for our current misconceptions. At last we come to understand who this being really is, the one we've always fondly referred to as a "genie".

Though she initially resists, Cindy is finally seduced by Djinn. And then we begin a wild and spiraling descent with her as her life unravels into frightening confusion. Those who know and love her scramble to help, but Djinn has a terrifying hold on her.

Poppet reminds us that there is one source for good and one for evil.
