The title of the book is but one question that children often ask about animals. As Information Officer of the Zoology Department at the British Museum of Natural History, Pope ought to know. An engaging, convenient question-and-answer format provides clear explanations of how animals might dream, "find their way" during migration and communicate. However, some of the answers aren't entirely satisfying. After a cursory mention of the ways in which alligators and crocodiles differ, Pope discusses the habits of the latter at length, with hardly a nod to the king of the sports shirt. And she neatly avoids the messy complications of animals eating each other by pointing out the necessity of the food chain and the transfer of proteins. Still, this book will cure some of the frustration parents feel when they don't have ready answers for their ever-curious young ones.
