Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- Two books that are distinguished by fine full-color photographs but marred by uneven writing. Red Sea provides an overview and introduction to the unique environment of that body of water, while 26 of the questions most often asked at the New England Aquarium are answered in Fishes . Both will be better as general interest items than as resources for reports. Red Sea includes descriptions of coral growth and reef formation that are detailed, yet simplified enough to be useful. Sometimes, however, the writing is confusing and the conclusions unclear. A few of the questions in Fishes are slightly anthropomorphic, such as, "Are Fishes Good Parents?" and "Can Fishes Talk?" The answers, nevertheless, provide interesting information. Primitive fish are referred to as "the Model T Fords of fish evolution," a reference young readers might not understand. One diagram is clear and easily understandable, while another--of anatomy--does not show the seven fins described in the accompanying text. --Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA
