5.0 out of 5 stars HALL & OATES Back To Form!!!
I approached my purchase of this CD with some skepticism having bought "Marigold Sky" and feeling that it fell somewhat short of what I knew Hall & Oates were capable of. Although there were some great tracks on about half the CD, the rest of the tunes were lackluster. "Do It For Love", thankfully, doesn't make the mistake of repeating that pattern. It's very hard to pick...

2.0 out of 5 stars I waited six years for this?
The most interesting thing about Hall & Oates used to be their wandering spirit: the early part of their career saw them refracting their soul roots through any number of lenses, from the folk-rock of "Whole Oates" and "Abandoned Luncheonette" through the prog sounds of "War Babies" and experimental "Beauty On A Back Street."...

It's very hard to pick a favorite, but "Someday We'll Know" with Todd Rundgren is amazing. For fans of Hall & Oates classic 70's sound, pre-"Voices" and all that, this will knock your socks off. For fans of the 80's stuff, there's tunes-o-plenty for you, too. As I said, I was a fan of the 4 or 5 great tunes on "Marigold Sky" and there are some great tunes in that vein as well on this CD. Daryl & John should be very proud of this project and you should make every effort to add this to your collection. It's a keeper!!!

Could it be that Hall & Oates are headed for a comeback? After years of critical failures (Soul Alone, Can't Stop Dreaming, Marigold Sky) and still being ignored by the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, Daryl and John turn "Do It For Love" into a new beginning. Just as 1979's "X-Static" primed the duo for their 80's successes that followed, "Do It For Love" could be seen in a similiar vein. This is the pair's strongest material in a long time and there are plenty of good songs with catchy melodies here like "Man On A Mission", "Forever For You", a cover of New Radical's 1998 "Someday We'll Know" which Daryl's vocals significanly tower over the original. "Getaway Car", "Miss DJ", "Do It For Love" and my favorite "Intuition". The cd as a whole is nearly complete and satisfying, but the old H2O spark is still missing somehow. This is a maturer, wiser, more world weary duo now, and the music reflects this change. There is nothing here that really resembles their 70's and 80's work, which is remarkable given that many musicians who've been around a long time tend to repeat themselves, but not here. Hall and Oates are true talents that for some reason have been overlooked for quite some time now. This being their first cd in almost six years, it is my wish that they make cds more often! Hall and Oates fans should easily enjoy this cd as an addition to their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hall and Oates are BACK BABY!, December 15, 2003

It is rare that I will write a review of a CD as I have always maintained that rock critics are the lowest form of critical life (I've never agreed with a rock critic in my life) and I never like to tell anyone what to listen to. However, in this case, I felt moved to show my suppor for the new H & O album.

I saw them on their Marigold Sky tour and wasn't impressed with the material from that album. Recently, I purchased the Behind the Music CD (another excellent album) and it had some of the new tracks and I fell in love.

Do it for Love is, top to bottom, an amazing album. Each time I listen to it, it gets better. The first three songs will grab you and Love in a Dangerous Time (I don't pretend to understand the lyrics, but I love the tune), the last track, will stay in your head. However, the stuff in the middle, gets better and better. These guys are as good as they were on H20 and Bing, Bang, Boom. Their melodies are smooth, their hooks strong, and the music just so much fun.

I've always loved Hall and Oates (I was raised on their '80s hits), but this is a new love. Look out world, they are back.

Enjoy and fall in love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever Hall & Oates Album?, July 26, 2004

This duo is not merely treading water here. The vocals and melodies are strong, as always, and I like the acoustic guitar feel this cd has. I think that this is the best ever Hall & Oates cd, with Big Bam Boom being a very very close second.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU MUST BUY THIS RIGHT NOW!, June 17, 2003

Daryl Hall and John Oates latest release is what I believe to be to be one of their finest as it may truly redefine the type of product that one can except from a class act. They could have easily rested an their laurels as they've had so many hits that there is no "need" for them to continue. I did not like their previous release "Marigold Sky" on the whole as it lacked strong songs and that Hall & Oates magic.

My expectations are always high for these guys, but I had heard "Do It For Love" and decided to give it a try. What a great choice... "Man of a Mission", "Getaway Car", "Forever For You", "Intuition" (I love the chorus),just to name a few, are gorgeous songs.

Daryl Hall's voice is as beautiful and expressive as ever, but it has matured and although the songs are all catchy, Daryl's voice is what makes them special. John Oates' influence on the duo has never received the credit it merits. Daryl Hall's single releases have been hit or miss, but always with great gems here and there. The the active participation of John Oates adds something that is not quickly definable in specific terms as his voice is not the best, but he seems to challenge John and provide great guitar work that cannot be copied by sometimes overproduced tricks that dominate the charts. This is not to say that the boys who sang "Adult Education" have given up on tight production, but here there is a melodic center which is enhanced by the production.

This release is what that so-called "Philly blued-eyed soul" is all about. Three decades later these guys have released an album that proves that artists can successfully survive the ups and down of a career that could have easily ended with the amazing time specific-successs that they enjoyed in the 1980's. Many acts (even some good ones) were never able to get beyond their association with the 1980's, but thank these guys for staying in the picture. They are around before the 1980's and their 2003 release has flashes of the early days, but it never disregards its many musical influences and sounds as current as some of the disposible material that tops the charts. I give this CD my highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hall & Oates Return To The Top!, February 11, 2003

This has now become my favorite collection from Daryl Hall & John Oates. There is no other album in their collection to compare this to either. As one fan put it "This is not your parent's Hall & Oates, this is not your Hall & Oates, this is your kid's Hall & Oates". I think not only their solo projects have affected their sound but also working with outside producers on the original versions of some of these songs. Touring so much the last 5 1/2 years definitely has made it's mark as well as all of these songs are very "live" sounding and should translate really well to the stage. Highlights include the #1 AC hit "Do It For Love", the current top 10 hit "Forever For You" as well as the funky "Miss DJ" the rocking "Make You Stay" the R & B tinged "Breath Of Your Life" and the bouncing opener "Man On A Mission". The guys are revitalized and are as revelant as ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Listen To It Twice, Love It Forever, February 28, 2003

I must admit that when I popped Hall & Oates latest effort, "Do It For Love", into my cd player, I was disappointed. Daryl Hall and John Oates are known for their lush pop melodies and instantly accessable music. That does not transcend to their latest effort, but the music on "Do It For Love", especially the #1 hit title track, is some of the best work that this dynamic duo has released in quite some time. "Forever For You", the duo's latest single off the album, is a beautiful, top 10, mid-tempo ballad. John Oates takes over the lead vocal duties on the reflective "Someday We'll Know", and the mid-tempo "Getaway Car" is definitely radio-friendly. Without a doubt, the most surprising and welcome addition to this album is defintiely the dance-floor ready track, "Miss D.J", of which you will most likely hear booming from the speakers at your favorite dance hall very soon. Listen to H&Os' "Do It For Love" without any pre-conceived notions of what you think it should sound like. By the second spin, you will realize that this album is a welcome addition to your music collection, and don't be surprised if you begin to play it over and over and over....

I was wowed by the new cd Do it for Love by Hall and Oates. It is a great album. There are so many great songs on this album, two singles from this cd have already reached the top 10. From Someday We'll know with guest artist Todd Rundgren to the funky song Miss DJ to classic hall and oates sound of Life's too short this album has songs to enjoy all the way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated masterpiece, March 27, 2004
This review is from: Do It for Love (Audio CD)
Being from Pennsylvania, I have been a Hall and Oates fan since the mid 70's. My first album from them was the 'Silver' on 8 track!!! Being 'local' boys was a big deal and actually my favorite music was their earlier efforts, Abandoned Luncheonette and Whole Oats. In the 70's every year brought a new album, War Babies,Silver, Bigger Than Both of Us, Beauty on a Back Street, x-static, Along the Red Ledge. They had had a couple hits along the way, Sara Smile, She's Gone, Rich Girl and in my mind should have been THE big thing. FINALLY with 'Voices' they were heard! However with success we 'old' timers while happy for that success, longed for some of the sound that got them there. 'Do It For Love' is it!!! I hadn't followed Hall and Oates for several years, the last thing I bought was "Change of Season', in the bargain bin no less. When I heard the song 'Do It For Love' from the VH1 show, I thought hmmmm, more would be nice. Then last September 2003, they were making a 'hometown' appearance with Kenny Loggins (ironic because the first time I saw them live was in 1977 and KL was the opener then!!!). The show blew me away and the next day the album 'Do It For Love' began heavy rotation in our cd players. My wife loves it and I feel it holds up to anything they have ever done. It has elements of all they have done in the past with a mature professionalism. Hope they continue to 'Do It For Love'!!!!!
