5.0 out of 5 stars Memorizing Math Made Musical!, November 17, 2001

If you or your children have had trouble memorizing math concepts, this CD is for you. Providing math concepts in fun and catchy songs, Harry Guffee is a musical genius. I prefer this to other titles by School House Rock, as Do the Math! goes more into depth with mathematical algorithms and formulas as well as ways to help you succeed. Sometimes funny, others serious, Do the Math! is a great addition to any CD collection.

This CD is a great idea, but the execution is just not quite there. It would have been so helpful to have sample tracks on the Amazon site: I would have saved the money. I put it on for my 9 year old son, and after only a few minutes, he asked that I just turn it off. We flipped through the tracks to see if one suited our fancy, but the music here is just not appealing. The words are somewhat clever, but I don't see the reason for pulling in so much bilingual content- we're doing math, not Spanish. The musical style might be good for some, but I dislike the style and the vocals. Pass on this one.
Contrast this to Beethoven's Wig by Richard Perlmutter- On that CD, the very clever lyrics are set to tunes of the masters. The vocals are not stupendous, and the instrumentals are not perfectly polished, but the whole package is so well concieved that it makes up for all of this, and the album is great overall. After all, ordinary musicians with ordinary voices can still produce fabulous results. This is not so with the "Do the math" album.

For Christmas this year, all the children on my gift list, including my two grandkids, will be receiving Harry Guffee's "Do the Math." In fact, I'm going to send it to some adults I know, too, because independent of learning math in a new and fun way, the songs are delightful and catchy for kids and for grown-ups. I particularly love the songs called Circle of Friends and the Guzinta Family. All my life I've been cursed with a math block, and after playing this CD over and over and over, I have actually remembered many math theories I hadn't thought about in years. I can't think of any other CD I own that is so much fun--and educational besides. I can't recommend it enough.
