A WWII Era Thriller, December 1, 2010
When a woman goes to stay at an old fashioned hotel during WWII, she finds herself wishing she'd gone somewhere else. Her first night there, she hears loud, pained screams in a room nearby, and since they occur several times, she goes to see what is going on. The occupants of the room tell her they are the police giving the third degree to a criminal. The next day, she is hit by a car, and her belongings are searched. When she returns to the hotel, there is a dead body on the floor.
Rather than call the police, since she believes they are framing her, she tries to escape to a friend's home. There, she will get a lawyer and be safe. But someone is following her and won't make it easy to get away alive.
This vintage novel is exciting without being graphically violent or filled with sex. The writing flows well and conjures up a by-gone era. There are several unexpected twists and turns, and the ending is a doozy.
