Wonderful book!,
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Do Not Open This Book (Hardcover)
Pig is about to write a book and has everything ready in his workshop. However, he is rudely interrupted by the reader and can't continue creating the story with the presence of a nuisance who simply won't leave him alone. So the pig decides to include the disturber in the story and try to get the book written anyway. What comes out of the collaboration is a fun and entertaining book. It teaches you how the words work and what happens when you are not careful with them. The illustrations complete the story and make you laugh all the way to the end. What I really liked about the book was the simplicity and originality of the idea. Now that you have opened the book, when you clearly were told not to, you are in for some big family laughs. My daughter and I really enjoyed this book. Armchair Interviews says a great book for children of all ages--if they can learn to use words more effectively

Michaela Muntean, Do Not Open This Book! (Scholastic, 2006)A cute little book, this is, that not only gives youngsters a picture of the writing process (and some of its more cantankerous denizens), but also carries a subtext about the care with which a person should choose words-- a lesson which the next generation will be in dire need of learning, given how the generation above it seems completely incapable of same. Our protagonist here is a pig who's trying to write a book, but his audience keeps messing things up by turning the pages. It's possible that very young children may get bored-- this is very much a one-trick pony-- but the story is sufficiently short that that shouldn't happen. And there is a great deal for kids to think about here, and for parents to talk to kids about after they've had a chance to ponder. A fun book with which to explore options with your budding writer. *** ½

Do Not Open This Book is delightful. The narrative and the illustrations work very well together. I especially liked the idea of an interactive book that deals with the problems of writing. Children will thoroughly enjoy this book.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Do Not Open This Book (Hardcover)
I bought this book as a gift for my 3 year old son's birthday. He absolutely loves it and asks me to read it to him often. My 6 year old son also gets a kick out of it. They think the book is hysterical and it's become a favorite quickly.

My first grader just giggles at this book. The drawings are wonderful and we have read it over and over. I know I will return to this book when my son begins to write longer stories at school. It truly portrays the fun of words as well as the great care that it takes to put them together.

I bought this book for my 6 year old grand daughter. I had her 3 yr old sister help wrap the book. She LOVED the book and wanted to have me keep reading and reading the story. She had belly laughs. Her sister also had belly laughs when she opened the book. Sure to be a favorite.

Definitely open this book!,
This review is from: Do Not Open This Book (Hardcover)
This was one of the best books I have ever purchased for my four year old grandchild. I brought the book when I came to babysit for the day and can't count how many times I had to read and reread this story. Almost every time I go there I am asked to read this story. I also enjoyed reading and rereading it to her. It wouldn't surprise me if my granddaughter is soon reading this to her younger brother. When you are told not to open this book it grabs your attention and doesn't let go til the very last page. I would like to let you in on some of the funny things in the story, but that would spoil the surprise for you. You'll have to find out for yourself.

LOVE THIS BOOK!,
This review is from: Do Not Open This Book (Hardcover)
My 5 and 4 year olds have been reading this book for a few years and absolutely LOVE it. They scream laughing each time we hunt to track it down at the library. It is a great read aloud book to a group of kids and is silly and fun. We finally are planning to get our own copy for the holiday since we get tired of renewing it or trying to find it at our library.

I was the mystery reader in my daughter's classroom which is a 1st/2nd grade blended classroom. The room had about 45 kids in it. They LOVED this book and laughed the whole time and it held their interest. I left a copy of the book in their room and it is a book they often read on their own. When I went in to visit the room nearly a year later a few of the children remembered the book and that I brought it.

This book is plain STUPID,

I really do not understand these rave reviews. The book looks like it was thrown together overnight. There was no thought put into the "story" and the illustrations are nothing spectacular. Only way to describe it is stupid. I returned it immediately and got something more exciting for my 5 year old.
