Book Description

June 25, 2010 Dogwise Training Manual
What exactly is a Do-Over Dog? It might be a shelter dog you’re working with to help her become more adoptable. Perhaps it’s the dog you’ve adopted, rescued, or even found running stray who is now yours to live with and love…forever. Or it could be the dog you’ve lived with for years but you realize he still has “issues” that make him a challenging canine companion. A Do-Over Dog is any dog that you think needs—make that deserves—a second chance in life.

I tore through this book in a matter of days, and have kept it out for referencing since completion. I adopted my first rescue about 3 months ago, and over the weekend picked up my second. I had been dissatisfied with Cesar Milan methods and was looking for something much more positive. Pat Miller writes an easy-to-read book, and her suggested methods are common sense: positive reinforcement is the best way to train most dogs. The book gives examples of real-life "do over fairy tales" and even some failures. She talks about puppy mills, socialization, generalization, and the proper crating techniques, among many other important aspects of a dog's life. She references other training methods. And while she does not exactly put down "compulsion training", she does highly suggest against it. She elaborates on "dog dominance" and why it is a human thought process, not a dog's. I feel empowered to train my rescue dogs together. If there is one book that shelters could pass out to new adoptive dog-parents, it should be this one.

We adopted a rescue from our local shelter almost 8 mos ago. She had been there for 5 mos, and we were the only family to look at her. Her previous owners had her 4 yrs and never socialized her. In fact, all she did was live outside and have tons of babies in those 4 yrs. Since, I've never had a rescue dog before, or one with as many challenges as Moxie has, I decided to do some research and look at books online and see what I could find. I took advantage of the "look inside" and decided to give this book a try, and I'm so glad that I did. It's written so that it makes sense and isn't over your head. The advice inside makes you think "that makes sense" when it comes to certain behaviors. I highly recommend this book and think that anyone who adopts a rescue dog should have this on their shelf and at their fingertips.
Moxie had never been inside a house, or ridden in a car. She hid in our house under a cabinet for a week, then would hide under our bed. To take her out, we had to take her on leash (and on a harness because she'd freak and pull out of her collar). We couldn't be in the same room with her while she ate, and she would run when she'd hear noises (microwave, tv) or see things she didn't know what were (ceiling fans, street signs, parked cars). She still likes to have her safe and quiet spot underneath the end table in her bed, but she has come so far. She has learned how to play with toys (she'd never had any), let us be in the room while she eats, and has learned that we are not going to hurt her so she comes and asks for attention (she was very uncomfortable at first with getting attention from us, so her asking to be petted and loved on...makes us very happy). She is still afraid of people she doesn't know, especially men, but we are working on that and she has gotten so much better. Just know that there are other people out there who don't have the perfectly socialized dog (I have very few friends who can relate)and that it can and does get better. She has become my 7 yr old daughters best friend, and I'm so glad we took the chance on adopting her and that we have this book to help us over the humps.

This book is an excellent read!! I've had dogs all my life, some were do-over-dogs, but all could benefit from the information that the author provides in this terrific book. The book provides discussion of most issues that a dog owner will typically face, how to best handle the situations, and when to get help from a professional.

As another reviewer suggested, this book is a must-have for someone adopting a do-over-dog. I too have purchased extra copies to give to our local shelter. Although Amazon will only let you buy 3, you can't beat the $12 price - buy one book for yourself and for only $24 you can help other adopted dogs and their new owners achieve a wonderful life together!! These enlightened owners will then continue to use the books excellent methods and positive training on any future canine companions and will tell friends what really "works" to live in harmony with their canine pals. GREAT books like this one have a way of making a BIG difference!!!

From someone who has adopted many rescue dogs, this book still gave many realistic tips and methods. This should be a standard read for anyone adopting dogs.
