5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done!!
Man, what delicious base lines! The minute the disc gets whirring theres that wonderful blast of deep-throated base which fills your soul, makes your foul day seem not worth whining about. All that can be said is that these boys are very talented, and will go far. The White Stripes connection indeed earned them that all important recognition, and Jack's done them proud,...

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars for sure...
I just can't give them anything higher or else my entire rating system goes out the window! The thing is, these guys are totally out there on their own. I could try and find comparisons and pigeon-hole them into some kind of genre. But instead I'd rather just tell you how they made me feel, and hopefully that'll be more helpful than trying to describe what their music...

Man, what delicious base lines! The minute the disc gets whirring theres that wonderful blast of deep-throated base which fills your soul, makes your foul day seem not worth whining about. All that can be said is that these boys are very talented, and will go far. The White Stripes connection indeed earned them that all important recognition, and Jack's done them proud, but from now on, they are sure to be able to run on their own steam. Singer David Swanson gives it his all, full of strange voice quirks and ticks, he makes things interesting, coughing in mid soul-shaking howl. Admittedly, he does get a little carried away with the old synthesizer, but who can blame him, he has so much pent-up energy. He's hyperactive, man! The drums are pleasantly energetic, carying more than just the beat, but helping those songs flow. Although there is no mellow side to this album, and much is sinister and strange with rabid fast beats, these guys have done well, and the lack of guitar is refreshing and exciting. Well done, guys, and I like your shoes!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's actually just LIKE a trash bag helmet, April 29, 2004

I expected no less amount of one star reviews to be listed under this album. Personally, I love Whirlwind Heat and I love their music. To be perfectly honest, I can't recommend it to anybody unless I knew them personally. Quite frankly, their music is not for everyone, and while it gets annoyingly cliched to say they sound like primates equipped musical instruments, it could be true depending on your own individual tastes.

I don't think anyone I know who likes Whirlwind Heat (and who wasn't introduced to it with an open mind) liked them at first--it's usually a gradual process in which the realization dawns that "hey. They're pretty damn cool." At any rate, I think the fact they're produced by Jack White puts very much stock into what they would sound like--the only thing it guarantees is that they'll be original. If you're open to original, and are have a pretty stable and broad definition of what is enjoyable, then you may like this album.

Imagine being lost while on vacation and getting really frustrated and maybe a bit freaked. But then relaxing into the unknown and just plodding onward, not knowing where the road you're on is going to take you. That's Whirlwind Heat for me.

What might sound annoying at first listen, is actually fraught with humor and fun. I can't help but think these guys were having a laugh the entire time they recorded this album. At the same time, they hit the rock button heavy and really deliver. Let them karate chop you into being a believer.

this band is loud and quite obnoxious. but i love them. hell i also like deerhoof, ex models and xiu xiu. so if you can handle any of those bands you may enjoy this one (though whirlwind heat sounds like none of those bands.... or any other band really.)

4.0 out of 5 stars youth noise, April 10, 2004
This review is from: Do Rabbits Wonder (Audio CD)
I can understand why people don't really like them; I didn't either on first listen. Frankly, I thought that they were junk not worth my money. But, lo and behold, two months later when I gave them another try, I found that they really weren't bad at all. Compare them to the 'youth noise' bands around like 'erase errata' or 'the supreme indiferrence' and you'll see that they are very similar. Great, catchy instrumentals, especially on the bass.

While vocals and lyrics could be a bit better, I think that they'll get better with time.

I have seen them open for the White Stripes twice, and I even saw the show in Cleveland that the other guy is talkiing about where the roadies from the stripes- who were dressed in the dapper black and red suits that Jack likes to sport at award shows, not space creatures from the '40's- smothered cake on the drums and wrapped the band in bubble wrap. While their live shows were more about being as ridiculously and hilariously in-the-unsuspecting-audiences-face as much as possible, the album is a little bit toned down. Yes they only have a Bass player and a drummer and the singer does play the synthesizer on a few songs (not as much as they do live) but I found the album to be full of bright spots, in a very post-punk post-grunge clashing. The songs were all annoyingly changed to color titles, so Im going to ignore that and say that "Trash Bag Helmet" is a great song and so is "Mangled Hair." It's fast and hard, but the singer is very audible so you can memorize all the lyrics to impress your friends/inmates.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is good, June 25, 2003

I saw them open for White Stripes in Atlanta, and I didnt expect to see such a rockin band. For some reason I really like their music, I can't put my finger on what's so great about them, but their show was full of energy, the music was sometimes funny and always loud, and they totally rock out.

5.0 out of 5 stars actually 4 stars, but one extra to annoy the pitchfork, July 19, 2006

Great album.
You can hear the influence of Pixies, Led Zeppelin and other great bands, but the mixture is original and creative.
I will not go into details, I think it is useless to explain the music.
By the way, never listen to Pitchfork - these guys don't understand music and go after the hype. It never works for me.

I also was introduced to this band at a White Stripes show at the Warfield in San Francisco...they have a fresh sound with original ideas and great bass. Any bass player that likes to rock out will apprieciate the multitude of sounds that this guy cranks out, and music lovers in general will love the funky beats!
