Book Description

June 2002
Rabbi Dorff focuses on the social aspects of the Jewish tradition, while tackling such timely topics as poverty, war, intrafaith and interfaith relations, and forgiveness. In addition, he discusses Jewish social ethics as they both relate to and contrast with Christian and American belief systems in modern society.

Dorff argues that Jewish sources, when properly placed within the framework of the realities of our own times, can provide important guidance for Jews on how to act in their daily lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended look at human motivations, September 8, 2002
This review is from: To Do the Right and the Good: A Jewish Approach to Modern Social Ethics (Hardcover)
To Do The Right And The Good: A Jewish Approach To Modern Social Ethics by Conservative Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff is an informed and informative examination of the commitment of Judaism to social equality. From the ethics of war and international intervention, to looking at the social problem of poverty from a Jewish point of view, to pluralism within the Jewish community itself, To Do The Right And The Good is a thought-provoking and highly recommended look at human motivations, what it means to be Jewish, and the necessity of holding oneself to an ethical standard worthy of the Torah.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, knowledgeable, and reasonable (and quite readable), April 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Thoughtful, knowledgeable, and reasonable. The author explores serious issues as only someone with a large breadth and depth of relevant knowledge and a long experience thinking and dealing with these issues can. These are all important issues and each one could easily justify a book length treatment. If these issues interest you (and IMO they are important and therefore they should interest most people) then this book is worth reading. It is well written and the author presents material in an easy to understand manner.
