5.0 out of 5 stars A Do Right Book
This book was so so so so good. My aunt put me on to reading books, with my first one being Flyy Girl. That book was great too. I picked up this book in the store saying to my self, I sure do need a do right man. But for now, I will settle for a Do Right Book. This book was really great, I suggest this book, not only to the sisters, but to the brothers too. I.B.U. -...

This is the second book that I read by Omar Tyree and I will say that it was better written and had a lot less cursing in it than Flyy Girl but the plot moved along very slowly. Omar told an intesting story of how Bobby Dallas climbs the ladder in the radio industry while having to "watch his back" from some of the other people in the radio business. The other sub plot involved his feelings for Faye, the lady in his life that he let get away after falling for another woman (Pearl). I found the book worth reading but parts of the book just seemed to drag on taking away from the overall enjoyment of the book.

A Do Right Man by Omar Tyree

Publisher: Simon & Schuster Inc.

Year: 1997

Number of pages: 350

Genre: Fiction

This book A Do Right Man is about a brother from North Carolina that is educated and handsome. His name is Bobby Dallas. Bobby graduates from college in he profession of radio talk show. Bobby has everything a good man could ever want except a good woman by his side. After the heart-shattering breakup with his first love he is running in between jobs and woman for along while. As Bobby becomes more successful in his career he starts to make a lot of plans for his future in his professional, as well as his personal life. With those intentions he tries to mend broken relationships but he finds out that being a man that does right is not at all easy.

I like this book and I would strongly recommend people to read it. This book is well written and even though its fiction the kind of situations that the character in this novel runs into is things that we can experience in everyday life. Once you pick this book up it will be hard to put it down.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, May 13, 2000
This review is from: A Do Right Man (Paperback)
Granted, this novel deserves props because it centers a GOOD black man--something African Amercian fiction, and society in general--seem to avoid. The subject matter is fine. It is the book itself that disappointed me. I'm not even going to compare it to his better novel, Flyy Girl, because the mark of a good writer is being able to write about different topics. But "A Do Right Man" seemed to be lacking something. Perhaps it is depth. I mean, Bobby's whole basis on becoming a man stemmed from his career and relationships with women. His situation with his disapproving mother is glossed over in favor for his love life. The old (and effective) writing tool "show, don't tell" isn't used at all. We can tell Bobby is successful; there's no need for the author to spell it out. We can tell Bobby has bad luck with women; we don't need that spelled out, either. There isn't any descriptions of settings; in fact, there is a great lack of description of any kind. And yes, Bobby has career struggles, but they last about the length of two pages. And his relationship with Faye pre-Pearl is so short lived, how are the readers supposed to feel bad when their friendship breaks down? Sure, we are told that they were close, but it's hard to believe considering we never get to see it and decide for ourselves. My imagination was so inactive during this book. It is not one of those "can't put down" reads. I had to force myself to finish it just because I paid for it. It is a tedious read. More like "can't pick up!"

4.0 out of 5 stars "Got To Read it", January 28, 2000
This review is from: A Do Right Man (Paperback)
"A Do Right Man" was a great book! I couldn't stop reading! Bobby was the man thru out the WHOLE book just like in real life you have your ups and downs with careers and relationships. I guess I can really relate because I've been divorced for 3 yrs now and haven't found that "Soul Mate" yet and I think about past relationships that I let slip right on by! So, Omar keep up the good work about the good single men that are still out there and for now I'm getting ready to read "Single Mom" which that I am. GOOD LUCK!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too slow and boring! Thank goodness I'm finished!, November 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A Do Right Man (Paperback)
Well, first the compliment. I really appreciated knowing some of the insecurities that men go through. That part of the book was ok. But, overall, the book moved too slow. Those of you who have not read the book, don't worry, nothing I could say will spoil the ending. At first it was ok, I figured that eventually he would get to the good parts. I kept turning the page expecting something exciting to happen. I was truly disappointed in the way in which he handled Pearl Davis. That relationship truly got on my nerves! The ending of the book was very uneventful. Also, I did not have to know, word for word, about all of the radio interviews that he conducted. That was sooo boring. And, what did taking vacations by himself have to do with anything? We didn't need a blow by blow of what he did on vacation, especially since he didn't take anyone. Needless to say, something was definitely missing. I haven't read Flyy Girl and I don't know if I feel like reading it. I'm hoping that the latest book will be a lot better. I have been keeping a journal for 15 years and I've had more twists and turns and exciting things happen than Bobby Dallas. The minute details of cigarettes and types of drinks (that he was unfamiliar with) were totally unnecessary. I am surprised that his editor or agent didn't ask him to redo some sections to add some spice to the book. I now know that I could use my journal and make the bestseller's list. Again, thanks for the insight on a good man's thoughts (though sometimes he was TOO weak, yes I said it!) but no thanks for the uneventful 10 years of his boring life!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, November 4, 2002
By
This review is from: A Do Right Man (Paperback)
The "Do Right Man" by Omar Tyree was good, but move rather slow. However, I did enjoy the book thoroughly, because it dealt with some reality that other books do not address. The reality I am speaking of in which I can relate to is the main character Bobby Dallas whom is struggling with the development of his career and finances. So many authors create this perfect utopia where nobody has problems with money or their career, and their biggest problem is finding that perfect "soulmate".

I was interested in how Pearl Davis would finally get what was coming to her for dumping Bobby the way she did and not really giving him a second thought. However, the author did not go into that which I wanted to know more than anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for your collection, December 13, 1999
This review is from: A Do Right Man (Hardcover)
After reading a lot of books that portrait the other side of brothers, it refreshing to see one came along that got the positive side. Omar really tells it straight, You can be cool and still be a good man. Hip-hop hooray. You would find it hard to put this book down once you started.

2.0 out of 5 stars what the ....!?, May 25, 1999

This review is from: A Do Right Man (Hardcover)
I am usually a fast reader (a book a day)when not working. But this book took me forever to get through. The main character was just too tempermental and just didn't appeal to me at all. I thought it would NEVER end. Not a good effort at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, May 18, 2001

After hearing so much about Mr. Tyree, I was anxious to start on the novel as soon as I got home from the bookstore. Unfortunately, about 3 chapters into the book, I was already disappointed in what I was reading. The author has no real lyrical style and his dialouge was mundane. Since the majority of the book was dialouge, it was extremely slow reading for me. All in all, a disappointment.
