Only somewhat joyful,

I've been a fan of Air's spacey music since their debut full-length CD, "Moon Safari" (1998). Hearing the duo's music morph over the years has been exciting, and they've released some of the best electronica of the past decade. I'm a particular fan of their under-rated 2001 CD "10,000 Hz Legend" and the song "How Does It Make You Feel?" The first single from their upcoming "Love 2" CD is solid but far from their best work.
"Do the Joy" starts with a guitar riff highly reminiscent of their prior work, almost a retread. The "vocals" are dark and distorted with some cheery "doo doo's" thrown in that contrast nicely with the robotic chorus. There are some interesting elements here, but they don't quite gel cohesively. In addition, "Do the Joy" ends as soon as it starts to gain some momentum. Perhaps Air will release some remixes that will improve upon the original. In the meantime, this somewhat lackluster first single has only whet my appetite for what I expect will be a more satisfying full-length CD. |
