Editorial Reviews

Since signing with Paw Tracks in 2009, Mississippi native Dent May has made music that balances saccharine pop sincerity and campy affectation. Eager to explore different styles since his debut album The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele, Dent's most recent singles "That Feeling" and "Fun," have seen him plugging in and finding footing somewhere between 60s psychedelia and disco-era balladry in the vein of Ashford and Simpson, a vibe he expands on with his 2012 record, Do Things.

This album is breathtaking, is excellent.

Dent May has made an integrated and impecble production, which mixes elements of synth and pop, respecting the differences with a high influence of the Beach Boys, is a perfect pop album, pleasant, melancholy, full of sound and vocal textures clean and nice.

An album that never let you down, is a comprehensive and interesting album from start to the end, that kind of POP is that we need in these days, an album with a stunning engagement force , an album that captivates you from the first time you hear it.

You have to listen music without prejudice to appreciate it, this record in particular, Dent May made the whole composition, production, recording and of course of the performance of this album, a man of many talents and merits.

I hope you enjoy it, highly recommended!

The song writing is great and the pop melodies are great. This is an artist to watch! Also a great band to see in concert. I have followed him from the first album, I can't understand why not more popular, perhaps they are just not well know. Currently on a European tour! Can't say enough about this band, with so many derivative bands out there Dent May is an original.

I love this CD, it reminds me of the 60's and 70's and 80's. The music and the lyrics presents a happy sound that makes me feel happy and free!

Dent May lies in a musical landscape where Brian Wilson, Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear live and create collaboratively. It's a place that is calming, longing and reminiscent of home. A home you only find in your dreams. Its' a place where being alone doesn't necessarily mean lonely.

I knew very little about Dent May before listening to his newest album, Do Things. As album opener 'Rent Money' began to play I felt instantly at peace. A mixture of 80s synths, Casio beats and angelic harmonies not unlike Brian Wilson's beautiful ode to love, Pet Sounds 'You Still Believe In Me'. Pet Sounds child-like wonder and good feelings plays heavily on the sound of Do Things. Listen to 'Tell Her' and try not to feel the ghost of 'Don't Talk(Put Your Head On My Shoulder)' hovering above. Besides Brian Wilson, the other influence on this excellent album is Animal Collective. In particular, Panda Bear. This record definitely borrows from Person Pitch's DNA. The mash-up of the past and present. 60s harmonies and minor key emotion grabbers intertwine with electronic beats and synth pads to create something familiar, yet completely unlike anything you've heard. The fact that he's on Paw Tracks records makes the AC similarity more understandable.

Not to say this is an album that's completely and ode to May's influences. He brings something completely new to the table. 'Don't Wait Too Long' has a funky bass line that you wouldn't hear on any of his Paw Tracks cohorts releases. There's more of an upbeat vibe. No dark feelings bubbling underneath the music. What you hear is what you get on Do Things. At times some tracks become more maudlin for their own good. Like you're waiting for this guy to get mad or sad, or something other than just melancholy and reminiscent.

A collection of songs that sound something like what the early Beach Boys might sound like if they made kid-friendly pseudo-disco pop about rent payments and being best friends. There's not really a bad song on the whole album, but it's all done is so tongue in cheek of a way that it's hard to enjoy the album without feeling like you're being made fun of for enjoying it.
