This review is from: Do-Watch-Listen-Say: Social and Communication Intervention for Children with Autism (Paperback)
This is a must read for all educators, speech pathologists and parents who are interested in helping children with autism learn complex social and communication skills. Dr. Quill's first book was wonderful; this book is even better. It is an easy-to-read book that gives hundreds of practical ideas for working on complex social skills and communication skills. There is a comprehensive assessment tool that targets key areas such as imitation, solitary and social play, communication, conversation and social-emotional skills. The recommended intervention strategies draw from the best of behavioral and developmental research on autism. This book is tops on my recommended book list!!!

This book is one of the best autism resources on the market! The social and communication targets and activities listed in the book provide a wonderful source of ideas for parents and professionals. As a speech-language pathologist, I found the assessment section to be the most helpful. The checklists provided have really given me direction as to the next steps to take with children. The text is also comprehensive, providing information ranging from joint attention and AAC to topics such as emotions and higher level pragmatic skills. I just can't say enough!

Review of Do,Watch, Listen, Say,

This review is from: Do-Watch-Listen-Say: Social and Communication Intervention for Children with Autism (Paperback)
If you are the parent of a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or a professional working with Autistic children, this is a must have resource. Social skill deficits are one of the most common problem areas found in Autistic children and one of the most difficult to address. Do, watch, Listen, Say is a comprehensive guide that helps pinpoint problem areas in social and communication skills. Quill has developed an assessment tool that allows for a quick and accurate evaluation of the child's skill level and she offers specific activities that address each area of deficit.

Another valuable book by Quill,

Do-Watch-Listen-Say must sit next to the earlier Quill book (Teaching Children with Autism)on your bookshelf if you work/live with someone with an autism spectrum disorder. Both are excellent resources. This latest book by Quill provides a 'much needed' assessment of the skills most often challenged in a child with a disorder on the autism spectrum, furthermore she provides a very 'user friendly' intervention component to address the challenges revealed by the tool. In a field fraught with 'alternative' interventions, Quill provides a very fundamental and efficient approach to sound intervention practices.

Working on a voluntary basis with Autistic teenagers, while researching and developing an intervention program, has brought me into contact with a world of research literature, instructional manuals and 'snake oil', that I never before contemplated. Quill's book stands out as well researched, with solid practices. Quill is careful to document the steps in the pedagogical process and the outcomes that are possible as a result. The purposes and methodology behind each lesson are very precisely explained. Parents and therapists reading this book are left with no illusions of the difficulties facing them in effecting even small progress. I have read at least half a dozen texts directed at children's needs dealing with the same themes, and in my opinion Quill's text is among the best. This is tremendous contribution, in my opinion, to interventions for autistic children.
Parents and professionals working with high functioning autistic teenagers (Asperger Sydnrome) may find less of direct applicability. In this case, I would recommend also looking at Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents.

Kathleen Quill's book on intervention for social/communication intervention has become a wonderful resource for me. Her review of the recent literature is comprehensive, and informative for those who do not consistently read it themselves. I found her ideas for training very complex and difficult skills extremely useful for my work as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Additionally, the organization of her approach makes this easier to explain this type of intervention to parents and families. I would strongly recommend this book to both professionals and families of those concerned with people on the autism spectrum.

Useful,
This review is from: Do-Watch-Listen-Say: Social and Communication Intervention for Children with Autism (Paperback)
I am a speech therapist and found this book to be a useful addition to my library, although I would suggest that anyone looking for information on autism check out multiple sources. There are simply too many viewpoints out there and too many different techniques for any one book to be 'the' book on treating autism. Also, this book was published in 2002 and at this point many of the suggestions will probably be nothing new to anyone familiar with the fundamentals of social skills training, using visual aides, and incorporating sensory techniques into therapy.
This book gives a good, balanced overview of how to effectively work with an autistic child. There were also a number of good suggestions and ideas for how to plan therapy sessions. I found some of the suggested activities to be a bit mis-matched in terms of ability level - some of the suggested 'games' for very basic skills, for example, seemed too complex for children working at such a beginning level. Overall, though, a good resource.

A practical book with some great advice for therapists and parents on having your autistic child OBSERVE AND LEARN FROM THEIR ENVIRONMENT! That is what we want right? I like this book because it gave me practical advice to work with my son the very same day on suggestions that work. For the holidays and birthdays give this book to your therapists/aides and teachers vs. another gift. It is a good, worthwhile read.

Finally!,
By Jessica (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Do-Watch-Listen-Say: Social and Communication Intervention for Children with Autism (Paperback)
Finally I've found a book on autism that takes the time out to discuss the nature of autistic challenges and their implications on social communication. I'm a graduate student in speech-language pathology who still didn't really 'get it' when it came to autism. My professors in language disorders weren't helpful either, and seemed to regurgitate the same information and catch phrases about autism without explaining what it truly is. I picked up this book and feel so much more confident in my ability to assess and begin treating nonverbal communication disorders on the spectrum. This book isn't dry at all and the information is thorough, yet easy to understand. Quill constantly repeats and summarizes key points to aid in comprehension of the major concepts. I recommend this a thousand times over!

Very Useful Book,
This review is from: Do-Watch-Listen-Say: Social and Communication Intervention for Children with Autism (Paperback)
Do Watch Listen Say - is a book that I was required to purchase for a class. Although is was required reading, I found it to be very helpful in planning and implementing strategies for teaching a range of students, including late talkers and kids with communication delays in addition to those diagnosed with ASD. Highly recommended for both teachers and parents - easy to follow and read. Good hands-on suggestions.
