5.0 out of 5 stars Our Language Is Not Dead, Thanks to Downset
Wow! Thats all I could say when I first bought this. And I'm still saying it now. Their upfront lyrical rapping style and metallic guitars make them a force to reckon with. All of the songs are great, except for Ashes In Hand. My personal favorites are Eyes Shut Tight, Keep on Breathing, and Sickness. Downset do not compare at all to the sold-out likes of Korn, Rage...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as their first....
When I got this album, I expected that it would be a whole lot better than it was. Mostly, I'd suggest that this was due to me being me: I wanted more rap and less yelling, and I suppose that on this album, they were going away from that formula (which a lot of other people have exploited since this album was released.... in a much less talented fashion....)

Still,...

All of the songs are great, except for Ashes In Hand. My personal favorites are Eyes Shut Tight, Keep on Breathing, and Sickness. Downset do not compare at all to the sold-out likes of Korn, Rage Against the Machine, or Limp Bizkit. They're more like a laid-back rapping Machine Head. If you like this, try One Minute Silence, (hed) p.e., Snot (RIP Lynn and Dobbs), like I said before Machine Head, and Dial 7.

5.0 out of 5 stars downset comes from the heart!, August 26, 1999
This review is from: Do We Speak a Dead Language (Audio CD)
The emotion of this band easily transcends any possible petty critisisms, about how they may sound like so-and-so, or whatever else. The biggist differance between this album and the first one is that "Do we speak...?" is definetly more tight as a whole album. Song for song, though, its just as good as thier debut. If Rage against the machine(another great band)is a politicaly conscience band, then the best way to describe downset is as a socialy conscience one.

This is one good CD. I like it. Most of my collection is different than this, meaning I've been listening to it a lot. A few things are kinda dumb, such as screaming "posiive" in Empower...but most of the CD is amazing. I don't see a point in having a reprise of Sickness, and I dont agree with the anti-sex views in Ashes in Hand but oh well...i love everything else, expecially Touch.

Downset rocks. Get this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sick..., August 16, 2006
This review is from: Do We Speak a Dead Language (Audio CD)
Downset is raw.I like this cd because of its conscience and positivity. Its heavy and Rey can really spit(unlike other"rapcore" artists)."Empower" is a real fist pumper, and the riff on "Pocket Full of Fatcaps" is insanely heavy. It's a pit and thought worthy cd.COP IT FOOL!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful!, March 25, 2001

I first heard Empower on a skate video and was amazed by how dope this song was, so I bought the album. Seeming as I really only listen to undergound hip hop this was a nice change. This hybrid of music is real dope beacuse it combines hip hop/rap and gives it a powerful and energetic edge. the intro is good, an extract from a M.L.King speech which goes into Empower which is by far the best track. Other good tracks are Horrifying and Keep On Breathing.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best Rapcord band ever., October 18, 2000
This review is from: Do We Speak a Dead Language (Audio CD)
All i got to say is that Downset is the best. Rey's got the best sounding vocals for rap and screaming and the guitar just goes hand in hand with Rey. i've owned a couple of these cd's due to scratching them alot cause of listening to them over and over but it's worth it. One of my favorites and worth buying more than once to listen to.

Still, this is a great album for people who like the idea of metal crossed with rap-- but with a positive message and without the kind of selling out that lots of other people have done (even if you allow that Kid Rock, for instance, is a novelty act....)

I like the first album a lot better: it's probably in my top five albums that I own. I really like a couple tracks on this one (Sangre de los Manos and Pocket Full of Fatcaps) but for me-- who has fallen toward being an underground rap fan.... I just can't bring myself to fully dig this album..... though I do love the group....

5.0 out of 5 stars Downset is one awseome band, May 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Do We Speak a Dead Language (Audio CD)
the first song I heard from them was ashes in hand, and that pulled me in. I found that song addicting, the guitar riffs, drums, lyrics. I had to buy the cd, and now it is one of my favorite.

4.0 out of 5 stars Downset? Are You Sure It's Not 'Up-Set'???, April 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Do We Speak a Dead Language (Audio CD)
They're a great band, but have ironic lyrics for a heavy metal band: positive lyrics. Not lame positive lyrics, but good ones that are much better than garbage like "Godsmack". If you like this buy it if you don't buy it anyways cause this band deserves the attention.
