Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) is the author of the classic novels Island, Eyeless in Gaza, and The Genius and the Goddess, as well as such critically acclaimed nonfiction works as The Devils of Loudun, The Doors of Perception, and The Perennial Philosophy. Born in Surrey, England, and educated at Oxford, he died in Los Angeles.

Huxley shows a wide range in this collection of essays, with observations on everything from the Odyssey to the "talkies", the latest in motion picture technology at the time these pieces were written (ca.1929).

The twelve essays are: 1. One and Many; 2. Silence is Golden; 3. Spinoza's Worm; 4. Swift; 5. Paradise; 6. Wordsworth in the Tropics; 7. Fashions in Love; 8. Francis and Grigory; 9. Baudelaire; 10. Holy Face; 11. Revolutions; 12. Pascal.
