4.0 out of 5 stars Fox vally music
Hi, Steve Sperry and I attended Lawrence College together, and did some gigs there together. I went to high school with Bob Timmers and Gary Laabs. We all played in bands of that era: Gary Laabs, Dave Hermson, Jerry Kowall, Roger Loos,Kenny Kleist, Rollie Richie, Dan Scorgi, Tom Leiniger, Daryl Yeager, "Wilber", Jim Kelly, Dave Yokum, Mike Beherendt, Denny...

3.0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll in Milwaukee, ena?
The compilation is excellent for the most part; however it is missing important background info, mis-identified players' instruments, and has at least one mis-spelling of a band member's last name which is inexcusable. The author should have done more research.

Hi, Steve Sperry and I attended Lawrence College together, and did some gigs there together. I went to high school with Bob Timmers and Gary Laabs. We all played in bands of that era: Gary Laabs, Dave Hermson, Jerry Kowall, Roger Loos,Kenny Kleist, Rollie Richie, Dan Scorgi, Tom Leiniger, Daryl Yeager, "Wilber", Jim Kelly, Dave Yokum, Mike Beherendt, Denny Noie, Al Posniak, Tom Gebheim, Jerry and Donny Williams ( Van Dynhoven), along with Carol,These were people I was in bands with, back in those days.
We played the Quarry, Starlite, Country Aire, Club 96, Prom, Redbird, Top of the First, Mr. Roberts, and all the local area clubs. It was my personal tape recorder that started Tee Pee recording along with Al Posniak. I built the recording booth out of cement block for him too, and engineered several of the early records. My name is on the records. I also played on some. I did the recording for the Moss men, and have the original tapes, along with Don the Drifter tapes. I have a pile of reel to reel tapes of the bands of the era, along with band posters/pictures.
I also have a stack of Tee Pee/ Target Production records.
I recorded Ricky Lee Smolinski on a few takes, Badger Beat and Varsity club. I am a little supprised that I did not appear in your book, since I worked with most of the people in the Fox Vally area.
I could fill you in on a lot of stuff you are missing if you want..Marty Jensen

5.0 out of 5 stars A great bit of nostalgia, January 22, 2009

This review is from: Do You Hear That Beat (Paperback)
After hearing Gary on Wisconsin Public Radio and enjoying listening to his reminiscing, I knew this would make a great gift for the musician in my family (namely my father) who cut his teeth in the same musical era. It was quite a trip down memory lane for him - even being from another part of the midwest, he still remembered and recognized plenty, and was tickled at the amount of information in the book. Great piece of work by the author. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The encylopedia of early R & R bands in Wisconsin!, February 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Do You Hear That Beat (Paperback)
This book gives a great insight about popular Wisconsin rock bands such as the Legends, Pharaohs, Renegades, Tonys Tygers; it even covers famous musicians from the Badger State - Liberace, Vaughn Monroe, etc. Many great pictures! A MUST if you are interested in this area!
