Good and Cheap But Want More, September 2, 2005
This review is from: Do-It-Yourself Gunsmithing (Hardcover)
This is a good book and it covers a good deal of info about working on the stock of a rifle. But I wish it covered more info about how to make a rifle shoots more accurately. I guess the author wanted to restrict to topics that are suitable for DIYers.

Gunsmithing for real !, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Do-It-Yourself Gunsmithing (Hardcover)
Jim Carmichael took over when Jack O'conner died and has always been good at what he does. WHAT DOES HE DO,YOU SAY ? He is a sportsman, a author of sports articles ,then he goes a step beyond by trying equipment, even to the point of construction. This is where the book DO IT YOURSELF GUNSMITHING comes in.If you have never tried customising a rifle stock ,Jim takes you through it step by step. How about making a custom part, such as trigger guards ? Jim takes you from the basic steel to cutting, forming, drilling, tapping and fitting until you have a firearm you can be proud of.
When I was a boy,I asked my Dad about getting a shotgun . I think I was about 14 . He said I could have one when I could afford one. In time I found a neighborhood grocer who had two double barreled 12 guage shotguns ,both with broken stocks. He told me that if I would restock one for him,I could have the other. My father showed me how to use the tools and layout the stock. High School
shop class had power woodworking tools such as band saws that greatly helped .The end of the story is that I made two shotgun stocks and got my first firearm. Now,I am over 70 ,still enjoying making my firearms a bit prettier or fancier than the factory did. And I am still learning with every project. Jim Carmichaels book is very good and ,trust me , I have seen several that were hardly worth the cost of the paper. Amazon.com was very helpful with the sale and the individual shop that made the sale was also first class .Both checked back for check on satisfaction . In this day and age.it doesn't get much better than that.

Book too old for todays modern pistols, October 12, 2011
This review is from: Do-It-Yourself Gunsmithing (Hardcover)
This book was printed nearly 40 years ago. Nothing on repairing pistols, mostly about hunting rifles. Waste of money. I should have spent more on a new or latest edition of a Gun Repair guide or book. Rated C-
