Howell Best of Breed Library

From the Inside Flap
The Doberman Pinscher Doberman fanciers love to describe the appearance of the breed as The Look of Eagles. The square, chiseled appearance, with athleticism oozing from every well-defined muscle, is the epitome of canine elegance. And underneath that statuesque appearance is an intelligent, complex animal with an inherent ability to guard and protect, coupled with undying devotion. Your Doberman wants to sit on the couch next to you, or right on your lap. Its head will always be pushing into your hand for a pat. With all that intelligence and exuberance, Dobermans demand to be doing something, especially with their owners. Training classes, dog shows, sporting events, long walks in the neighborhood or runs in the field or forest are just some of the things that will keep a Doberman healthy and happy. The breed also has a distinguished record of service to humanity, as guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs and in police and protection work. The Doberman definitely has it all—elegance, intelligence and versatility.

5.0 out of 5 stars MATURE AND COMPREHENSIVE, March 6, 2000
By Apj Bouwer (Harrismith, South Africa) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is my first book on the Doberman, and what a wise choice it was. While explaining the route that breeders in the US follow, the book gives the German point of view as well. Ear cropping futures strongly. I especially appreciate the absence of arrogance in terms of the Doberman as compared to other large breed dogs. Understanding my own Doberman is now a lot easier than before I purchased this book. The authors's years of experience in breeding Dobermans as well as their love for the Doberman is obvious. The book is very comprehensive. I am also very impressed with the importance given to moral and ethical issues as it relates to the Doberman. Photographs are mainly black and white with a few full coloured ones in between.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST own Doberman book, whether you already own one or not, April 29, 2003
By Brook Campbell (Loveland, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This book went beyond my expectations as far as complete information on Doberman Pinschers. Whether you are looking into the breed for the first time and maybe just want a campanion, or you have a desire to breed, or even show, this book written wonderfuly by the two authors, covers all one book can. This book covers topics on Dobermans in a way that I felt I had really learned something.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Purchased this book before it was published., November 17, 2000
By Myykkyy "myykkyy" (MD United States) - See all my reviews
I suggest any person contemplating buying a Doberman should definately read this book. It is very informative and useful in understanding the Doberman Pincher. The writers have come together beautifully to give the very best feel for a extraordinary animal. They explain all concepts of owning and caring for a Doberman. Breeding and owning Dobermans themselves have made them experts in all aspects of ownership. Take special attention to chapter 8, Keeping Your Doberman Healthy as there is information there that is absolutely necessary to raise a happy healthy Doberman.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very dry and in depth, but informative.
This would be a great reference if you were to have to do a report on the breed. It is very in depth and informative. It was a little too dry for just casual reading. Read more
