5.0 out of 5 stars MATURE AND COMPREHENSIVE
This is my first book on the Doberman, and what a wise choice it was. While explaining the route that breeders in the US follow, the book gives the German point of view as well. Ear cropping futures strongly. I especially appreciate the absence of arrogance in terms of the Doberman as compared to other large breed dogs. Understanding my own Doberman is now a lot easier...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very dry and in depth, but informative.
This would be a great reference if you were to have to do a report on the breed. It is very in depth and informative. It was a little too dry for just casual reading. All and all, a great book.

This is my first book on the Doberman, and what a wise choice it was. While explaining the route that breeders in the US follow, the book gives the German point of view as well. Ear cropping futures strongly. I especially appreciate the absence of arrogance in terms of the Doberman as compared to other large breed dogs. Understanding my own Doberman is now a lot easier than before I purchased this book. The authors's years of experience in breeding Dobermans as well as their love for the Doberman is obvious. The book is very comprehensive. I am also very impressed with the importance given to moral and ethical issues as it relates to the Doberman. Photographs are mainly black and white with a few full coloured ones in between.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Purchased this book before it was published., November 17, 2000

I suggest any person contemplating buying a Doberman should definately read this book. It is very informative and useful in understanding the Doberman Pincher. The writers have come together beautifully to give the very best feel for a extraordinary animal. They explain all concepts of owning and caring for a Doberman. Breeding and owning Dobermans themselves have made them experts in all aspects of ownership. Take special attention to chapter 8, Keeping Your Doberman Healthy as there is information there that is absolutely necessary to raise a happy healthy Doberman.

This book went beyond my expectations as far as complete information on Doberman Pinschers. Whether you are looking into the breed for the first time and maybe just want a campanion, or you have a desire to breed, or even show, this book written wonderfuly by the two authors, covers all one book can. This book covers topics on Dobermans in a way that I felt I had really learned something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book about Doberman Pinschers, March 3, 2004

This book covers a lot of basics and understanding behaviors of dogs. But if you are planning on getting a doberman pinscher for a pet, you might want to skip some chapters in this book. This book deals with a lot of dog showing. If you want to show your dog, get this book. Even if you don't, you still want to check this book out because it covers a lot of things from training to history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, October 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doberman Pinscher (Hardcover)
I think this book is excellent. I say this mainly because of the fact that it addresses much more information about the psychology of the breed itself than the typical text out there. It speaks a great deal about protection work rather than some I've read. It discusses many different opinions/options concerning people that like showing dogs and people that don't. I was very glad to see it talked about sport such as Schutzhund, and where to explore those avenues if you are more inclined with that. It gives information about the U.D.C. as well. I think the book gives much more than the usual BS that is discussed about dogs in general.

Thank god there are some authors out there that feel a need to discuss the breed characteristics, unlike the large portion that like making a quick buck. This book at least talks about other topics if that's not what your into. Like other reviewers I like reading the different views of other countries about the breed. I was very happy to see the information about the difference between German and US standards about the breed.

I personally think showing any dog that performs some form of working task cripples the breed if can't keep the same breed instinct it was breed to do, but that's just my opinion. Clearly I'm more into the German working standards, so therefore I greatly appreciate this book. I'm also greatly interested in reading some German books about this breed if I can find one translated. If any readers of this are into the same views as myself than they might want to as well.

I don't agree with everything the authors think, but I at least like what they discussed. German Dobermanns are no longer what they used to be, and many of the breed regulations are no longer. I don't like the UDC as much as I like the SDA. It's too bad they didn't discuss much more about sport trials for protection work, such as The Ring sports and KNPV. There are still some good kennels out there, but not many.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best..., December 5, 2004
This review is from: The Doberman Pinscher (Hardcover)
I own 2 dobermans myself and if you are going to get any of the doberman books available this is the one to get! It has lots of information in all catagories for new owners to learn about. For the experienced owner there is not much more to learn but this is an excellent one to add to the collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, January 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doberman Pinscher (Hardcover)
What a wonderfully informative book. A must for any dobie enthusiast or for someone considering the breed. Great information on the history of the doberman as well as general care for all ages of dogs. Great sections on breeding, training, temperments, showing, sporting, and a fantastic section on health and general care. What is great about the authors is that the book is not just one sided, such as "only show type dogs and cropped ears", it represents both working type and show type dogs as well as American and German standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this one!, October 9, 2000
This review is from: The Doberman Pinscher (Hardcover)
Breeder recommened this to me and must concede that it is one of the most comprehensive works on the breed. Good history, fine points on character, working abilities, breeding, illness & disease, all the way to show information. Great pictures throughout. If it is Doberman Pinscher information you seek, look here.
