These Guys Can Play,
By A Customer
This review is from: Doc & Dawg (Audio CD)
I saw these two geniuses at Town Hall in New York last month, and of course they had me on the edge of my seat, in awe, the whole 3 hours. I knew it would be an incredible show, but I didn't realize just how incredible. This cd doesn't quite capture the atmosphere of a thousand satisfied customers whooping it up at the end of each song, and Doc Watson grinning ear to ear, or David Grisman's unbelievably relaxed attitude while playing even the most complicated, extended soloes. But that's stuff you have to see. This cd is fantastic. The atmosphere's like at a coffeehouse or something, where the audience is there, but silent, and the musicians are just a few feet away. It's just the two of them (with an occasional third man, Jackson, on guitar) trading soloes the whole way, with a mostly traditional bluegrass sound, except for on Summertime, the old Gershwin jazz tune, which people shouted for at the concert. I wish they'd release a lot more of these two.

This is a wonderful CD. I am a long time Doc Watson fan and this has some of his best playing. David Grisman is outstanding. The two blend well with complexity and clear picking. It is an album by two masters.

I just bought this CD and it is absolutely fantastic, beautiful clean picking that runs sweet and deep. I've seen both these guys separately in concert, and this cd represents the combination of two absolute geniuses as my imagination can hardly touch. It is heaven listening to these songs.

Where ya been all my life, David Grisman? I've always loved folk / traditional / blues music, but _Shady Grove_ has changed my life over the last few years. This album has much good in common with that one. Time-tested tunes played with companionable wit and confidence. As an amateur musician, I find this stuff inspiring. Highly recommended for folk addicts, 'grassers, Grateful Dead relationship-network completists, fretted-instrument fetishists.

Review of Doc Watson and Dave Grisman,

This is my first Doc Watson CD and it proved to be an amazing choice. Ive always been a long time David Grisman and Jerry Garcia fan and this hits perfectly with that style. When Doc Watson sings Summertime his voice is just so perfect. I would recomend this to any new fans or if you have always been a big fan. Very good instrumental songs on here, bring this backpacking if you happen to live in an evergreen state!

I love this CD. I am not all that familiar with Doc Watson, I love his playing and singing on this but cannot compare it to other recordings. David Grismans playing is great, of course. But best of all, the songs are all wonderful choices, all showing a unique flavor.

Sweet summertime joy,

I enjoy this cd quite alot but a couple of the songs, namely ALL ABOUT YOU and the hyper version of SWEET GEORGIA BROWN take something away from the album for me. Although played very quickly, GEORGIA seems a bit lifeless to me.What earns this cd four stars? SUMMERTIME, WATSON BLUES, and most of the other tracks. SUMMERTIME being the standout vocal track though. I dare say that this is my absolute favorite officially recorded example of Doc's singing. For me personally, that track alone makes the cd worth buying, but I gave the cd 4 stars just to let you know that there may be a couple songs you won't enjoy. As far as all the playing is concerned though, it's top-notch picking, even if I don't particularly enjoy a couple of the songs. |
