Pure ambrosia for lovers of popular trumpet music., July 4, 1998

This review is from: Doc Severinsen & Friends (Audio CD)
This album represents an excellent mixture of popular and brazilian tunes, performed in a minimalist lounge atmosphere. There's nothing minimal about Doc's technique however! Here he exhibits a fine display of range, power, and restraint. Doc brings to the fore an almost unlimited amount of embellishment, that makes this a musical experience that one never tires of hearing. The backup singers are a delight as they exude a joyful perfection in their renditions. The other musicians - percussion, guitar, piano and bass, are equally balanced and produce a marvelous effect.
My favorite selections are 2. Don't Go Breakin' My Heart, 4. Guantanamera, and 9. So Nice (Summer Samba). These songs have more hooks than a bait store, and are performed flawlessly. I especially marvel at the sheer musicality of Don't Go Breakin' My Heart; a very emotional experience is to be had here.
The only flaw that I detected during the dozens of times I've listened to this album, is 7. Walk On By. There is one barely noticeable bad note by Doc, which should have been corrected (I hate to even mention it). Doc's playing is exquisite nonetheless.
The mastering and sound quality of this CD is very good to excellent.
I highly recommend this album.

I have recently acquired an original copy of this album and it is nothing shy of amazing. Is it cheesy 60s music? Yes! Is it a phenomenal recording from Command Records? Yes!! Does Docs' Horn Make you want to play the horn yourself? Absolutely!! If you like talent and awesome sounding recordings I suggest you find anything from the (Now defunct purchased by ABC)Command Record label. This recording is a rare gem. You will know why he was the leader of Johnny Carson's Band for so many years. If not Doc You should try
Provocative Percussion
