The Bio:
Julie was born in Iowa in a pumpkin patch next to the Duck Creek mall. Her parents were out Christmas shopping one day and stopped by. Somehow she managed to fool them into taking her home. They put her under the Christmas tree where she turned into a baby. Baffled, her parents have never since bought a pumpkin for Christmas, though she does have one other sibling, a younger sister who was born in the spring 6.5 years later.

She moved to Ohio with her family when she was young where she met one of her BFF's and spent the better part of 14 years. She grew up around boats and spent as much time with horses as she could. She doesn't remember learning to ride and has since concluded that she probably learned to ride before she was born.

She learned to be a voracious reader after she and her BFF hated each other for a summer. Her BFF spent the summer reading, and once they were BFFs again the next school year, Julie picked up the habit.

Her first masterpiece was a picture book about Willy the Bookworm. Amazingly enough, this masterpiece survives today, and she even thinks she knows where it is. This was followed by many Nancy Drew style mysteries in elementary school, followed by a longer science fiction piece in high school. She never intended to be a writer, she was going to be a paleontologist. Her 6th grade reading teacher was the first person that planted the seed in Julie's head that she was going to be a writer some day. Thanks Mrs. Fox... it's not all your fault, but you sure helped the process along. Julie didn't believe her at the time, but she believes her now.

In college Julie studied Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines until she found out she could get a degree in horses. Firmly set on that plan, she moved to Fort Collins and got her BS in Equine Science. After she graduated, she naturally got a job working in the computer/internet industry.

She's had many jobs over the last few years but a few things have remained consistent in her life: her love for horses and her passion for writing.

Julie has several critters in her life. Her first cat Tux, a polydactyl black and white barn cat, claimed her when he was a kitten. He allowed her to bring him home when he was 8 weeks old from the barn she later bought her horse from. Six months later he decided he wanted a playmate and Sabaska (Julie's horse) was just a little to big for him so he sent Julie to the pet store. She thought she was going for fish food and came home - a bit confused - with an adopted kitten from a local rescue. Tux was pleased. Solstice, the crazy calico, was also pleased and they began to plan for world domination.

Several years later Julie was again claimed by another cat. Sophie, a beautiful tabby, worked her way into Julie's life. Tux and Solstice were not pleased, but over time they grew used to her, and while they don't include her in their plans for world domination, they do play with her now and again.

The last member of her furry family came to live with them in June of 2010. Kira, a border collie puppy arrived in her home with the intent of foiling the world domination that was brewing from the cat trees. She has succeeded in disrupting those plans, but only time will tell if her mission was successful.

Julie now lives in northern Colorado with her horde and her significant other, the Irish Sailor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise June 10, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a pleasant surprise. I guess I've always been a sucker for dog stories. This one is told from the POV of a border collie named Doc. Doc finds himself suddenly drawn into the mysterious world of vampires, which he calls the dead things. And he finds he has a certain talent for helping to kill them. This is a charming and delightful story. My only disappointment was that it was not longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing take on the vampire/vampire-hunting genre! February 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What an awesome take on the vampire/vampire-hunting genre! It was really refreshing to read a vampire story told from the dog's POV; and "Doc" is much more than a simplistic, limited narrator. The world is very clearcut for him: good buys, bad guys; happy, sad; peace, danger. Loyalty is king and it makes the narration very clean and crystal clear. A great, fun and quick read that sticks wtih you, particuarly if you're a dog lover!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vampires, Vampire Hunters and....The Dog January 30, 2012
By Mardel
Format:Kindle Edition
There are lots of books written about vampires, humans, dogs and vampire hunters. There are many books written about dogs. There are so many books written from a vampire's point of view, and many written from a vampire hunter's point of view. But as far as I know, there is only one book written from the point of a view of a vampire hunter dog. Yep! that's right. Doc is a border collie who has a special skill - to hunt vampires...

When I say written from the dog's pov - it's really from the dog's pov - first person narrative. Campbell did a great job making the dog sound like a dog. Doc spoke in terms of dogs. Smells, his human, the obsessions that dogs can have - in Doc's example, that would be sheepherding. His human is so cool about it that he puts on the t.v. so Doc can watch sheepherding games. Have you ever come across your dog or cat seemingly transfixed on a t.v. show? I have. There are times when I wonder what the dog or cat (of the moment) is thinking when they are staring intently at the t.v.

Doc is a novella - and stems from an online storyline that J.A. Campbell gifted her early fans with. After a while, she took some of the stories down and reworked them into this version. There are still a few shorts available online for free reads.
Doc has a human that has been a bit sad lately. Their lives have recently changed. Doc's human has been going out at night and coming home tired. Almost by accident, Doc gets involved in his human's night-time activties. This is when they find out that Doc has this special talent with vampires. Things are going along, when as things do,You-Know-What Hits the Fan.

If you enjoy vampires and vampire hunters, and dogs - if you enjoy mix of all three then you're going to like this story. I enjoyed it a lot. As with all of her work, Campbell is able to instill a touch of horror, mystery and a bit of snark for a great mix. Her humor isn't overdone, either. You know how sometimes the snark seems to be trying a little too hard? you won't find that here. What you will find is a darn good story about dog who loves his human, and a human who loves his dog. The narrative is great - once you start reading it, you just want to go on reading. The dialog (which can be my pet peeve on any given book) is believable and fits the character. This means a lot to me - seriously a lot. There's some great action scenes - one part when I - and I'm a jaded 50-ish woman now, felt like tearing up for the DOG! I don't do that. Ever! well, hardly ever. :)

There's a satisfying end, and yet you know that it's really just the beginning....
