Book Description

June 1, 2000
This book gets right to the point and provides the reader with the information they need in order to: identify their lakefront property, select the best style dock that matches the intended use, mounting and anchoring their structure, and incorporate existing structures into their waterfront design. The book includes detailed blueprints of ten of the most popular dock configurations. Including floating docks, stationary docks, sectional docks and swim rafts. Each design includes a bill of materials and step by step assembly instructions. Practical construction techniques and valuable pointers roll off of every page. The three dimensional illustrations speak volumes and provide the reader with a visual aid as to how each step should look when completed. The hardware section gives insight on what's available on the market, the function of each item, and when and where each item is used. The book is bound to allow the reader to remove the blueprints from the binding. This allows the builder to bring the specific blueprints they need right to the job sight.

This book is not only intended to help thee reader build an attractive dock, but is also intended to help them take their waterfront design to another level. People pay a premium for their waterfront property. Well designed structures that consider the issues raised in this publication can enhance the value and enjoyment of that property. Dock Designs, Volume 1 is one tool that will help the reader reach those goals.

From the Author

As a licensed contractor building waterfront homes, and as an avid fisherman, I’ve spent a great deal of time exploring a plethora of lakes. It’s amazing to me the number of expensive waterfront homes that have docks that are in a state of disrepair. People pay a premium for waterfront property, the boat docks they install can add to the value and enjoyment of the property. Determined to offer people an alternative to the “make shift” structures seen on lake after lake, I decided to design a series of attractive wood dock units. The success of these installations and the appreciative comments received from my customers, lead to the creation of this publication. Building a boat dock isn’t rocket science. However, by applying some forethought, you can maximize the effective use of the structure, enhance your existing landscaping scheme, and add to the enjoyment and safety of your water activities. These designs are intended to stimulate your creative nature and to help you choose a structure that best matches your property.

1.0 out of 5 stars You won't learn much about docks from this book., January 4, 2003

This review is from: Dock Designs, Volume 1 (Residential Series) (Ring-bound)
I was extremely disappointed with this book when I saw how little real information it contained. The author is a licensed contractor who's designed and built an unspecified number of docks and wished to pass his knowledge along. Unfortunately, he doesn't give more than a very high level overview and doesn't provide enough information to enable anyone to actually build any of the docks he talks about.

The deck plans provided in the book do come with materials lists but the drawings are too complicated for an amateur to understand. The chapter on hardware would have been better if the pictures were clear enough to see (ever see a copy of a copy of a copy?) and we don't get to see the hardware being used. The deck drawings would have been easier to understand if he had provided some perspective drawings showing the construction details.

The biggest downfall for me was the almost non-existent information on the hardest part of deck construction: the connection of a floating deck to the shore.

1.0 out of 5 stars No help to me at all., August 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dock Designs, Volume 1 (Residential Series) (Ring-bound)
This book is very basic and provides only a very abbreviated overview of dock construction. It may help the reader with framing the dock and a materials list but the help stops there. This book provides no specifics on securing the dock, attaching the gangway to land or accomodating fluctuating lake levels. Save your money or you will be disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dock Designs - Did not help me., January 17, 2001

This book might be okay if you are building a floating dock. I wanted to build a stationary dock and it was of no help. It only detailed building the decking, not the difficult parts -- how to secure in water, etc.
