I must say, this book has caused me to change my opinion about Harlequin! Sure, they can turn out a lot of junk, but there are always gems, especially with the Super Romances. This book hits all the right spots with me, considering that I'm more of a historical romance reader. There was a tortured hero, but it was not melodramatic. The characters struggled with deep, genuine, real-life problems that are rarely portrayed in romance novels in such a compelling manner. There is no overarching plot, but I actually like that. This is really just a story about two people falling in love. The author shows such keen insight into emotions such as grief and fear, and she makes the relationships, both between the central characters and the supporting ones, seem authentic. I say human drama beats out an overkill "plot" any day!

1.0 out of 5 stars Like cardboard - hard to chew, November 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was so hard to read. I wanted to give up so many times because the "heroine" was so immature and self-centered. The hero, while stilted too, was at least sympathetic and likeable. Katie may be the most superficial and uncaring character I've ever come across in a romance. She was just a brat, I have no idea why the hero pursued her at all. That was the main issue here, lack of true character building and the motivation of these characters just not being believable. The secondary heroines (the sisters) were better than the main character. I really didn't want to waste my time reading about Katie, and I cannot imagine - nor did the author ever bring me to understand - why the hero spent any time on her either. There was one scene, where he revealed the source of all his heartbreak and pain, and she just...wait for it...got up and walked away. So unherioinly. I have a hard time not finishing a book once I start, its like a compulsion. So like eating bran cereal, I forced myself to plow through this one even though I wanted to give up on it at least six times. But all I can do is warn others away from it. Save your $3.99.
