Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

South Dakota-based Strand, a general practitioner for nearly a quarter century, turned his attention to nutrition in the mid-90s when traditional medical approaches failed to help his wife's chronic fatigue. In his authorial debut, Strand preaches vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and other nutritional supplements with the zeal of a new convert. His opponents are formidable: the government, food suppliers and the medical establishment who, Strand says, disregard evidence that the RDA recommendations are inadequate to supply us with the weapons to fight chronic diseases. Chapters cover "Oxidative Stress and Your Eyes," "Cellular Nutrition" and "Homocysteine: New Kid on the Block," among other ailments and panaceas. Despite the alarmist title, those who suffer from or are at risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, auto-immune disorders and lung disease may want to weigh the evidence for themselves; Stand's book is designed to provide an alternative perspective that aids in doing so, though it also includes various supplemental regimens he has devised. His message, after all, is fundamentally a simple one: let's protect and care for our bodies, Strand says, and "may we all live until we die."

Product Description

When Dr. Ray Strand found himself in a losing battle, unable to successfully treat his wife who had suffered chronically with pain and fatigue, he agreed to try the regimen of nutritional supplements that a neighbor suggested. Much to his surprise, his wife's condition began to improve almost immediately. That amazing turn of events led him to dedicate himself to researching alternative therapies in medicine, particularly in the arena of nutritional supplements.

Dr. Strand's illumination of the body's silent enemy-oxidative stress-will astound you. But, more importantly, his research will equip you to protect or reclaim your nutritional health, possibly reversing disease and preventing illness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, must read!, January 5, 2006

This is a must-read for anybody interested in their health. (Who isn't?). It confronts the pharmaceutical and medical industry and basically shows that the health care system in the USA is in need of great improvement. Other developed countries spend far less on healthcare, and have greater human life expectancy....the USA can do better.

Here, Dr Strand empowers the reader, and equips him with knowledge to prevent or fight many degenerative diseases. He backs it all up with more than 1300 sceintific studies.

He is not selling vitamins, as he cites no brand names in the pages. Any body that thinks that quality vitamins are expensive should try the alternative...illness, disease, and missed work opportunities.

Any medical Doctor that wants to excel at true patient care, and teaching, and to build up his practice, with long-term vision should buy this book, and practice what is recommended to complement their current activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr.Strand is selling books and subscriptions not supplements, August 30, 2004
The book does a terrific job positioning supplements as an aid to medecine and as a prevention tool. His web site clearly is a business to sell both his book and subscriptions to his information about supplements specific to various diseases and disorders.

Reviewer # 2 "A Reader" claims Dr. Strand is in the business of selling supplements, which does not appear to have any basis in fact. His apparently amateur criticisms of Dr. Strand's research citings seems to overlook the many mentions Dr. Strand makes for research supporting his findings. For instance on Page 8, Dr. Strand says "In the past year alone, I have examined more than thirteen hundred peer reviewed medical studies involving nutritional supplements and how they affect chronic degenerative diseases. These studies are double blind, placebo-controlled medical studies, the kind that physicians love. The overwhelming majority of these studies show a significant health benefit to thos patients who take nutrients at optimal levels, which are significantly higher than the RDA levels."

Dr. Strand is no snake oil nor even supplement salesman. He offers solid advice for improving your health beyond the recommendations of the traditional medical community. Five years ago, many doctors did not support multi-vitamins and high dosage antioxidants. Recent research is beginning to change this, but Dr. Strand is out in front for people who need more than traditional medical treatments can offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help With Your Health, September 3, 2005

This book is very important for modern health concerns. It offers treatment for problems that conventional medicine is unable to address.
Arguments are presented in a clear professional manner that is convincing of their truthfulness. This is no pseudo medicine full of a quacks mumbo jumbo. The case histories are very helpful to illustrate and confirm the points.

Also the availability of online consultation, presented in the book, is of unique value.

I use this book as a reference with my friends who have health questions and problems.

Most antioxidants we get from vegetables and fruits. The most common antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, and beta-carotene. We can obtain numerous other antioxidants from our food; these include coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, and the colorful bioflavanoid antioxidants. "e;
