Book Description

September 2003
Jack Kerouac gives free reign to the powers of his soaring imagination in this previously unpublished screenplay adaptation of his mystical, vision-novel Doctor Sax. Basing the haunting tale in true reflections of his 1930's childhood growing up in the industrial milltown of Lowell, Massachusetts. Kerouac spins out a dark cosmology as "concentrations of evil" gather -- vampires, gnomes, spiders, werewolves of the soul, "leerers at the glad heart of others" -- aspiring to destroy mankind. Doctor Sax -- alchemist of the night and friend of the children -- is the caped crusader who stands against the darkness.

Come along on an audio adventure, as young Jacky Duluoz leads you on an apocalyptic journey to confront the Wizard and the Great World Snake.

- Unabridged original screenplay text

- 74 illustrations by Richard Sala

- Readers Include: . Jim Carroll . Graham Parker

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Creative "Book Movie", February 16, 2004

This review is from: Doctor Sax and the Great World Snake: A Multimedia Experience (Hardcover)
It's about time something like this was done. Kerouac would have been proud of this presentation of his book "Dr. Sax". Lowell, the Merrimack River and Kerouac's childhood visions of dark, comic book characters and other "concentrations of evil" are brought to life in this "golden age of radio" style production of Kerouac's "Dr. Sax". Recently produced, voices include Lawrence Ferlinghetti as The Wizard, Robert Hunter as Dr. Sax, and Jim Carroll does a wonderful job as Jacky Duluoz among many others. Music by John Medeski of Martin, Medeski and Wood. Included are 2 Audio CD's and a book (illustrated screenplay).

1.0 out of 5 stars Jim Carroll totally ruins this, April 22, 2011

This review is from: Doctor Sax and the Great World Snake: A Multimedia Experience (Hardcover)
Jim Carroll may have been an interesting writer, but his abysmal performance here totally ruins the otherwise interesting audio production of this obscure Kerouac. The sweetness and warmth of Kerouac's writing as interpreted by a shaky junkie-voice is incredibly distracting. One day someone will make a quirky film out of this, my suggestion is to read the screenplay and don't bother with the discs.
