Book Description

February 2003 An Evergreen book
Madison Smartt Bell is one of the most versatile and gifted authors of his generation, a literary stylist with few peers. Doctor Sleep, one of his best novels, is a taut and satisfying psychological thriller planned to be released as a major motion picture under the title Hypnotic. Adrian Strother is a hypnotherapist who, paradoxically, can't get to sleep. He plies his trade in a depressed section of London, doing the occasional job for Scotland Yard, which brings him into contact with an unsavory drug trafficker. As little girls become the target of a serial killer, Adrian treads the line between tortured wakefulness and surreal sleep, and the gifts of his insomnia are called upon to unlock the secrets of a man who believes he has discovered the key to immortality. Part spiritual pilgrimage, part thriller, Doctor Sleep is witty, menacing, and deeply satisfying, a bravura performance by one of today's finest writers.

This review is from: Doctor Sleep (An Evergreen book) (Paperback)
This book was supposed to be the book that the movie "Close your eyes" was based on. It is not. It is less than three hundred pages and by page 160 I was still waiting for the movie to start. The only thing that this has in common with the movie is that the last name of the main character is the same and this character dabbles in the same occupation that the movie character works hard at. Other than that - nothing. The main character in the book (single, slacker, selfish) was nothing like the main character in the movie (family man, hard worker, putting others before himself). Okay, I thought, totally different book. That's fine - If it was good! I stopped reading at page 160. Over halfway through the book and there was still no discernible plot. It was one 160 pages of whining. Whining that he couldn't sleep, then keeps waking himself up to go meet friends. Whining that drinking was making him feel sick, and then drinking some more. Whining that he was hungry and then not eating because it didn't taste that good. Whining that his girlfriend left him - yeah, who wouldn't! Useless book. I was on a plane, with no movie, no music and just this book and still couldn't read any more.
