5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Box of Timey-Wimey Bits!, March 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space (Misc. Supplies)
As an experienced role-player I have tried many systems in different genres. I prefer systems that allow maximum use of one's imagination and the ability to create a character with a detailed personality. The Doctor Who RPG allows you to create almost any in-universe character you could possibly imagine. Similar to the Cortex system used by Margaret Weis Productions, the system uses simple attributes, skills and traits to create the player characters and a very simple yet flexible means of creating exciting conflict without reducing it all to dice-rolling. The system offers a "graded" game mechanic where a success or failure can be anything from marginal to outstanding (or terribly bad), allowing for imaginative storytelling during conflict resolution. The character creation system is generalized and flexible enough so that you could in fact create an RPG version of yourself to be the Doctor's next companion.

In terms of in-universe flavor, the game focuses on the updated series, with only minimal references to the original run. It does not, however, limit the players to gaming only in the modern era. It is entirely possible to roll back the clock and play in the classic series timeline. The books themselves contain color photos from the show and are generally well-written and laid out. Character sheets for the Doctor, Rose, Martha, Donna, Captain Jack Harkness, Sarah Jane, K-9, and Mickey Smith are provided.

The high price tag is perhaps the one drawback to the set, although this is mitigated by the fact that you get both a Player's Handbook and a GM handbook in the package, along with dice, character sheets for the cast, and a generous supply of tokens and blank sheets. The cost is not bad compared to the 80+ dollars you might spend on, say the D&D core books, but a bit expensive compared to the everything-in-one books available for such games as the Serenity RPG. Still, Doctor Who fans who love RPG's will thoroughly enjoy the set, and RPG fans who are casual Whovians will probably enjoy it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fan of the Show or Fan of Role-Playing here is one for you, February 6, 2010

Got this box set the other day and have been reading thru it. I have played other formats for RPG's and this D6 format is by far one of the easier to understand. Color books and Sheets are a great bonus to the fact that most RPG's will give you 2 color books, not here full color and tons of photos from the show. If you are a fan of the show, this gives and great way to carry on the Doctor's travels until the next series starts. You can play as the Doctor or one of the main companions or for you wanting too, make yourself up as a character and play yourself. Travel the whole of time and space with the Doctor and see what is out there to see. The rules are easy to grasp and well written. They put more of a lean towards Role-play not Roll-play. Mind you now that there will be rolling of dice, just that this system is designed to get the players using their minds and not just their dice to make the story move along.
Those who are a fan of RPG's and looking for something different, this is a good one to try out. Not like your normal Sci-fi RPG, and if you are at all geeky or a bit nerdish than you are familiar with Dcotor Who and will know the style of play that this game is looking to put forward. The D6 format is designed to help move the game and story point system is there to help out when the dice fall a bit short.
With this one set you have in your hands the whole of the game truly needed to start play, Players and Gamemasters Guide as well as 2 starter modules to get you up and running before making up your own. And if you are really up for the challenge, take your favorite or not so favorite episode and see if this team could do any better.
The price here is the best that I could find and I looked everywhere. Give it a try I think it will find a welcome home at your Game table.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doctor Who RPG, June 25, 2010

I have not played.GM'ed (or purchased) a Role playing game for a number of years.
The DW:Adventures in Time and Space set has changed things a bit.
The rules and character generating is fairly simple, and there is plenty of room for a GM to be very creative.
If the publishers can come out with a few more supplemental booklets (all 11 Doctors, Gallifreyans/Time Lords, the multitude of Alien species, UNIT, TORCHWOOD, etc.), then the game may become even more well rounded.

Another pleasant thing to note is that this RPG is all-ages friendly.
What a nice addition to all things Whovian!

5.0 out of 5 stars A high barrier for entry, perhaps too high., February 23, 2011
This review is from: Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space (Misc. Supplies)
Short, simple and sweet: I bought this boxed set at Origins 2010, and it's a definite must-have for both Whovians and people interested in a different type of RPG mechanics. The concept that the person who would rather talk than fight will go first in initiative is... an interesting initiative dynamic. The high cost for the boxed set (which is justified by the contents, they are full color and well made) will be a definite barrier of entry for people. Perhaps if Amazon sold an eBook version...
