Frogs in space?,

The TARDIS materialises in an enormous spaceship, which is en route to Earth. They meet three aliens: two human-looking (Persuasion and Enlightenment), and one frog-like creature called Monarch. Monarch invites the TARDIS crew to remain for the short journey to Earth. The ship also contains some Earth humans from previous visits. But Monarch has a plan he is not divulging...This story is, perhaps, the weakest of Peter Davison's first season as the Doctor. Monarch's plan is particularly convoluted, the Doctor's companions are largely undifferentiated from each other, and the story is full of annoying bits, the most annoying of which, to me anyway, is Tegan's ability to speak a particular ancient Aboriginal language - most Australians know nothing of the many Aboriginal languages, let alone be able to converse in them. It appears simply an effort to recognise Tegan's nationality - the other human passengers, who are Chinese, Greek and Mayan, all speak English! Possibly a good indicator of the relative merit of this story can be see by the fact that, of all the Peter Davison Doctor Who stories, this is the only one not yet released on video. |
