Finally a book that actually discusses the history of the show in some measure of depth and also includes the classic series!

What I was looking for when I picked this book up was a thorough behind the scenes history of the show.

I am a fan or Doctor Who, but not a fanatic! A Whovian, but not a Whoviac! I've been watching since the ninth doctor renewed the series, and have seen a number of the earlier series (at least one from each doctor, I believe).
This book is readable, and has lots of behind the scenes information about the doctors and their companions. It puts everything in perspective if you want to have a sense of where you are in the 50 year history when you watch a particular episode. It also lets you know what the actors playing both the doctors and their companions were thinking and experiencing as they became part of this iconic series. Summary: Its not so detailed as to lose the casual reader, yet gives a good introduction and overview of the series and its primary characters, writers, and producers. Well done, Alan Kistler.

Having grown up watching Tom Baker (#4) and Peter Davison (#5) reruns on PBS in the U.S., I'm a lifelong Doctor Who fan. I've seen the first few from the new season but I'm a few years behind because I've been waiting to get my family caught up on the classics, especially the ones I grew up to love.

That said, I decided to stop reading this book once it got up to the parts of the new series I haven't seen yet, but I'm over 70% through, so I feel I can offer a fair review.

What I was looking for when I picked this book up was a thorough behind the scenes history of the show. How did it start? Why was it cancelled in 1989? How did it survive until its return in 2005? Who are the writers, producers, actors, and directors and what's their story? How did they decide who was going to play The Doctor when they needed to find one?

This book answers those questions. If you're looking for a book covering the lore of the "Whoniverse" and endless bits of trivia, check out 'Who-Ology' instead. This one covers beats from the show but it mostly focuses on the production process itself. If you're more interested in what went into making the show, and how it has developed through its long 50 year history, this book is for you.

I couldn't put it down, and once I get caught up on the new series, I can't wait to read the rest!

Fifty years is a long time, especially when it comes to television. For a program to last that long—through changes in cast and culture—is quite a feat. Doctor Who debuted in November, 1963, and enjoys more popularity now—fifty years later—than ever before. Children and adults adore the program, and it is finally more than just a cult hit in America.

Comic book historian Alan Kistler examines the classic British program from its very genesis, including the original pitch and evolution of the premise and characters. Each of the first eleven personalities to take on the role of The Doctor are profiled, with background information on the actors and the mannerisms they brought to the role. Special attention is given to the companions and other supporting characters, and of course the TARDIS. The behind-the-scenes players, from Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert to Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat, are given their proper due.

From beginning to end, this is a comprehensive look at one of the most beloved television shows in history. Any fan will absolutely love Doctor Who: A History.

If you are a fan of Dr Who or have a relative who is obsessed with the series then this is for you.

Written from a fan perspective I wasn't able to determine any inaccuracies.

I came across this as it was recommended along with Doctor Who Questions Answers and Trivia as a good starting point for those interested in the Doctor.

I love the cult classic and can't wait for the new Doctor. This is a fantastic, behind-the-camera history of the best show known as.... Doctor Who
