4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best I've read
I don't say this lightly, but I've read a lot of the new slate of Doctor Who novels, and of all of them this is at the top of my list. The characters were fun and lively, especially the supporting characters. The action never stopped, the book kept you moving along at a brisk pace.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I saw the ending coming. Then it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Captures the feeling but reads like a fanfiction
The book is good, but not worth the money, especially if you are buying it for the Kindle. Eight dollars for a digital copy and no hardcover book is not worth it. The book reads more like a fanfiction, and they are a dime a dozen on the internet. The writing feels stiff and forced, the dialouge too scripted for television, the action scenes too chaotic. The...

This review is from: Doctor Who: Paradox Lost (Kindle Edition)
I don't say this lightly, but I've read a lot of the new slate of Doctor Who novels, and of all of them this is at the top of my list. The characters were fun and lively, especially the supporting characters. The action never stopped, the book kept you moving along at a brisk pace.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I saw the ending coming. Then it didn't end that way, which was a neat turn. But then the story turned again and did end the way I thought it would after all, which oddly enough made me happy that it ended the way I wanted it to, but I wasn't left feeling "oh that was predictable". Nice touch. (If you are confused, well you'll just have to read the book won't you.)

I especially liked the characterization of Rory, and wish the TV show would move just a bit more in the direction in this book. The TV series shows him just a bit too timid, and sort of comic relief. Here he was more competent, I thought he came of as a "real person" in my book. He was brave, not hesitating to defend Amy, but not prone to the recklessness that Amy or the Doctor often exhibit.

I also thought the Squall were an interesting new villain. Nothing earth shattering in terms of originality. Many of the concepts I had seen in other sci-fi bad guys, but the portrayal, especially the bleeding from the eyes their victims suffered was a nice effect.

If you are looking for a fun book that deals with some both interesting and confusing paradoxes, this fast paced book is for you.

The characterization of The Doctor and Angelchrist are good, but to me Amy and Rory seem to have an emotionally abusive relationship.

I enjoyed it as a fan, but not as a reader. Steer clear unless you are a very big fan.
